Hook
answer
Imagine it is 1985 and you are in South Africa. When you look out, all you can see are barren lands. Around you, there are people dying from starvation left and right. Why? The environment is too harsh to support the growing of crops. But fast forward 30 years, and now you look out at the same land to see it supporting corn and other grains. How can this be? Genetically modified foods.
question
Thesis
answer
Genetically modified foods can be made less-susceptible to disease, boost the economy, and can tolerate harsh climates.
question
Call to Action
answer
Help build a more suitable environment for the people around the world. Support and donate to the genetically modifying foods.
question
Reason 1
answer
Genetically Modified Organisms can be made less-susceptible to diseases.
question
1 A)
answer
Since 1998 in South Africa, disease resistant corn, cotton, and soybeans are being planted and harvested.
question
1 B)
answer
As of 2009, the South African Department of Agriculture predicts a production of over 13 million tons of corn, which is the biggest harvest since 1982.
question
1 C)
answer
With plants being able to survive through diseases that would normally mean death, those harvesting are able to harvest a significant amount more. With plants surviving disease, more crops can then get harvested and sold, boosting the economy of the country participating in GMO production.
question
Reason 2
answer
GMO's boost the global economy.
question
2 A)
answer
Ever since the initial production of genetic crops, economies around the world have been affected in a positive way.
question
2 B)
answer
It is estimated that the economic gain from biotech crops in South Africa from 1998 to 2011 was 922 million US dollars and 98 million in 2011 alone. In all participating countries, genetically modified crops have heightened farm incomes by 18.8 billion dollars in 2012 alone. Almost half of this income was generated by farmers in developing countries.
question
2 C)
answer
With the increase of biotech crops, there has been a great increase in the global economy. Just as the economy changes from country to country, so does the climate.
question
Reason 3
answer
GMOs can tolerate harsh climates.
question
3 A)
answer
By having the ability to plant foods in places that previously could not support crops, farmers are able to provide food for their families
question
3 B)
answer
The USDA estimates that average global corn losses due to moderate drought are already at 15 percent per year. If farmers had a seed that would survive with less water, there would be no 15 percent to worry about.
question
3 C)
answer
With GMOs able to endure harsh weather, rice can now be grown in Iowa, and corn can now be grown in Asia. If a large drought is predicted due to global warming, farmers can plant a different corn seed that will grow with little rain. Thus, harvest will barely be affected.v
question
Summary of Points
answer
Genetically modified organisms can be adapted to be immune to certain diseases, thus resulting in millions of plants that would have died, being harvested. GMOs also boost the global economy fueling billions of dollars into the economy in just a few years. Lastly, GMO's can be altered to endure harsh climates, allowing harsh weather to cause no effect on the growing and harvesting of crops.
question
Restate Thesis
answer
Genetically modified organisms can be made to resistant to disease, and harsh climates, boosting the economy with each seed planted.
question
Concluding Thoughts
answer
Imagine yourself in South Africa. Instead of seeing desolate land, you see land rich with crops. Why? Because you chose to support the genetic modification of plants and organisms.
