Deserted, old rubbish "Old news" A kind of wasted Los Vegas Referred to as another state of USA
question
Why is Titus' trip to the moon significant?
answer
Titus' trip to the moon is significant though, as it introduces two potentially life changing events. Firstly, he meets Violet and secondly, a terrorist hacks into his feed. These events provide the complication for the narrative.
question
Why is the moon used by Anderson?
answer
Symbolically the moon represents aspiration. We sometimes use the idiomatic phrase 'reach for the moon' meaning to aim for a distant goal, and in the mid-twentieth century idealistic rhetoric surrounding the race for the moon highlighted endeavour and discovery. In one ancient legend the moon was regarded as place where things wasted on the earth, such as misspent time, were treasured. In Feed the moon has just become another territory annexed to the United States.
question
Name the four sections of the novel
answer
Moon, Eden, Utopia, Slumberland
question
What is highly ironic about the Utopia section?
answer
An imaginary place considered to be perfect or ideal, especially in its social, political and moral, but here Anderson's point is to show just how dystopic it could be. We watch Titus move from satisfied complacency "I could feel all of my family asleep in their own way round me, in the empty house, in our bubble, where we could turn on and off the sun and the stars, and the feed spoke to me real quiet about new trends..."
question
What technique does Anderson use to show issues that face society now in regards to consumerism?
answer
Anderson uses allegory to discuss issues that face society now. Remember Feed was written in 2002. The media is all consuming, and our mental images consist of "snapshots" from songs, movies, ads... all challenging us to be better consumers rather than better people.
