When people find themselves in difficult situations some people given in and other people never give up. I have therefore chosen to explore the theme “Persevering in the face of Adversity” This theme is common in the short stories “Big Brother, Little Sister” by Witi Ihimaera and “Only A Woman” by Amel Benaboura and also in the films “Invictus” by Clint Eastwood and “Vertical Limit” by Martin Campbell. The theme “Persevering in the face of Adversity” is shown through the short text “Big Brother, Little Sister” by Witi Ihimaera. The story is set in a poor environment in New Zealand where violence occurs.
The main character Hema, despite being exposed to such a harsh environment still takes responsibility and looks after his sister Janey.
...The harmful environment Hema faces is clearly shown through the use of foul language from his father to his mother. “Shut your face women…or I will crack you one again”. This technique clearly demonstrates the derogatory way in which people treat each other like his parents, despite all this when Janey was taken by a man. Hema left home to save is sister form the violence, well they were on the street Hema saw a loose pailing and pulled it away from the fence and ran to save her and faced off against the man.
This shows hema intense love for his sister. He was willing to protect her even if it meant endangering his life. Through this act, Hema shows us that he managed to keep his good/positive side of his nature, despite being exposed to violence and abuse. The author shows us that it does
not matter if we come from bad situations, we can succeed in life similarly in Only A Woman the main character Yamina perseveres in the face of adversity, unfortunately she dies in the process.
In the short story “Only A Woman” by Amel Benaboura set in Algeria a particle society where men overpower their women. The main character Yamina is a Muslim women who is trying to get equal rights for women in Algeria but the men in her family are Muslim extremist who do not think much at all of women. “This coming Friday, the women’s association is organising a march to protest against men’s unpunished acts of violence, and for the liberation of women”. The main character Yamina is severely mistreated by her brother Nabil.
He is a dictator and an extremist of the Islamic faith. This is why Yamina is scared to go to the March, but she managed to persevere although she was afraid that her brother could brutally harm her. She decided to go through with it anyway. Unfortunately Nabil tragically murders her when she goes to the March, but Yamina never backed down. Just like Nelson Mandela in “Invictus”. He did not allow the white government to overpower him. In the film “Invictus” by Clint Eastwood set in the past apartheid era.
The main character Nelson Mandela was jailed for 27 years because of his beliefs to have a united South Africa. He wanted all people to be treated equally . It was difficult but he persevered and never gave up and becomes President of South Africa. He tries to unite the country through rugby. Nelson
Mandela thanks Francois pienar for what he had done for his country. “No Mr President, thank you for what you have done for our country”, Francois Pienar says this to Nelson Mandela, showing that he respects Nelson Mandela even though he is a black man.
Who has persevered and gone through the adversity to have a united South Africa, just like Peter in Vertical Limits persevered and saved his sister Janey. In “Vertical Limits”, set in Death Valley, USA, the main character Peter an American man who love to climb and take photos of wild life in their natural state. Peter is faced with adversity when climbing and a pair of climbers fall from above and knock him, his father and his sister off the mountain and they are just hanging on by one rope that won’t hold all three of them.
You have to do something for me Peter, OK? ” “It’s one dead or three”. Peter’s dad wants him to cut the rope, but Peter is hesitant until his dad says “You are gonna kill your sister” and Peter’s dad hits the ground after the cut scene and Peter saves his sister. I believe that all four of the short stories and movies that I have read and watched over the last two months are perfect examples of persevering in the face of adversity, as they all overcome their circumstances that they face, I have learnt that if you want something that you just have to go and get it.
