Music is everywhere. You wake up in the morning to your alarm clock blasting music into your ear. Then you take a shower and sing your favorite tune. Even when you enter your car, you turn on your radio and rock out to your favorite music station. Music is not just an art, it is an expression of lifestyle. People can usually distinguish what type of person you are just by listening to your taste of music. Without music, life would be a mistake, some people say. It would be hard to imagine a world without these harmonical tones. We love music because we fell like music understands us.

Music can create a mood, or describe a mood. New music is always being invented as well. When times change and lifestyles are altered,

music changes as well. During the 1920’s people began to live life. They partied all day, and kept the party alive at night. They wanted life to be upbeat and exciting. This lead way to the birth of Jass (Jazz). Jazz set the mood for the 1920’s, upbeat and fun. This is fairly similar to the creation of dubstep in the 2000’s. People see the 21st century as the computer age, and dubstep complements this new age perfectly. The mood it sets expresses a fast paced, rhythmic feeling.

To begin with, you must realize that dubstep and jazz are really both the same but yet different. Let me explain, jazz takes all the rules and guidelines which apply to all the other genres... then it breaks them. Jazz plays it chords and notes to its own rhythm. It

combines the swinging notes of each instrument; trumpet, drums, etc. , and creates an upbeat song. Dubstep does the same thing. It takes the standard hip-hop song that Young Beezy down in the hood listens to, puts it on a computer, and cuts it up to make a different song. Both genres have no real feel to them. They could be upbeat and moody, or it could be melodic and euphoric.

These two types of music are different because they break all the rules. They evolved into something that doesn’t need a set of guidelines for it to be considered music. They make their own rules. One major difference however, is the instruments of each genre. Modern dubstep can use any type of sound imaginable because every sound heard in a song is made on a computer. Jazz however, is limited to the sounds that instruments make. Jazz producers won’t have the variety that dubstep producers have, yet dubstep producers won’t have that experience a Jazz player has for their instrument.

I have seen countless amounts of dubstep producers hire musicians to help create melodies and develop leads. They both have qualities that the other lacks. Another great similarity is that they both express their generations perfectly. People in the 1920’s wanted to be happy and lively. When you listen to a jazz song, any jazz song you can feel that urge to get up and dance. You instantly feel happy and the song makes you want to move. Jazz is full of life and so are the people of the 1920’s. Then we look at the generation of the 21st century. Fast

paced, always moving, full of self-expression.

Dubstep is special genre. No one dubstep song is the same. Each dubstep song is unique, full of bass drops and synth leads that don’t leave you bored. That’s what the 21st century is, constant movement. We must be doing something or we can’t function. When there is silence, we feel awkward. Dubstep keeps the 21st century computer generation happy. As you can see, dubstep and jazz are the same thing, music. Music will never be the same because people keep changing, lifestyles continue to evolve. 20 years from now we will see a new type of music. We don’t know what yet because we aren’t there yet.

People in the 1920’s never thought that music would come out of a computer, that’s mostly because the computer wasn’t invented yet. We can look at our situation the same way. What will be developed in the future that will make music different and unique? Maybe we will make robotic pigs that sing for us. We never know. As for the music, I can guarantee that there will always be new songs in the future. Jazz was then, dubstep is now, and the future remains a mystery. Music is an art. “If you gotta ask, you’ll never know,” Louis Armstrong once said about Jazz. When your music comes around, you’ll know.
