Restoration of sight in an individual who has been blind for his entire life will not immediately result in his ability to see the things around him. It may be possible that the functional vision of this individual may have been modified due to the length of time that he has been blind. Functional vision pertains to at least three major factors, namely the visual capacity, psychological condition and the environmental situation of the individual.
The visual capacity of an individual pertains to the proper functioning of his visual system, in coordination with the central nervous system (Juodzbaliene & Muckus, 2006). Visual capacity is also closely linked to the motor abilities of the individual. In the case of a person who has been blind all his life, his motor reflexes and sensitivity ma
...y be sharper than that of a normal, healthy individual (Hayeems et al. , 2005). In addition, the hearing capacity of a blind person is generally sharper than that of a non-blind person.
The restoration of eyesight to an individual who has been blind all his life may thus result in the influx of several external stimuli, thus resulting in an overwhelming amount of signals that the individual needs to process at the same time (Kiser et al. , 2006). More importantly, this individual may perceive all these stimuli at a greater degree of severity and thus his immediate reaction could be that of an outright shock.
It would thus be helpful for the individual to slowly identify each image with a particular sensory descriptor, in order for him to be acquainted with the components of his immediate
environment using a non-blind perspective. The initial sensory integration that the former blind individual employed will then be gradually modified so that he could adapt to his newly acquired vision. The individual thus needs to learn how to connect visual images to each of his stored cognitive perceptions, all of which were acquired during the years that he was blind.
