Essays on Veterans
Veterans Day is a national holiday in the United States celebrated on November 11th to honor all men and women who have served in the U.S. military, both living and dead. It was originally called Armistice Day when it was first established in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. Today, Veterans Day honors all veterans of all wars, including those who served during peacetime as well as war-time periods. The day is marked by parades, speeches, memorial services and ceremonies honoring America’s fallen heroes at cemeteries around the country. Every year there are also wreath laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery where people come together to pay their respects to those who gave so much for our freedom and safety. For many veterans, Veterans Day is an opportunity to reconnect with old friends they served with or simply take time out of their busy lives to reflect upon their service experience in peace and quiet. For others it is a chance for family members and friends of fallen soldiers to gather together and remember loved ones lost in battle with respect and gratitude for the ultimate sacrifice they made defending our nation’s values abroad. At its core, Veterans Day serves as an important reminder that we must never take our freedom lightly”it has been earned through years of hard work; dedication; selfless courage; commitment; blood sweat tears; discomfort adversity; physical pain mental anguish broken families destroyed dreams shattered hopes ” this list could go on forever but what remains unchanged is the profound sense of patriotism felt by American Veterans everywhere every single day regardless if it’s Veteran’s Day or not.
