Vaccination is a medical procedure that helps to protect individuals from diseases or illnesses caused by certain pathogens. Vaccines work through introducing a weakened or dead form of a virus or bacteria into the body. This triggers an immune response in which the body produces antibodies, allowing it to fight off the actual pathogen should it enter the body later on. Vaccination has been instrumental in eradicating many deadly diseases, such as polio and smallpox. It has also helped to reduce rates of other serious infections, like measles and whooping cough (pertussis). The process of vaccination involves exposing people to antigens, which are substances that induce immunity against certain viruses or bacteria when injected into their bodies. The antigen stimulates an individual’s own immune system to create antibodies specific to the particular pathogen being vaccinated against; these antibodies help protect them if they come into contact with that same strain of infectious organism in future. A successful vaccination campaign requires high levels of coverage across whole populations ” this idea is known as ‘herd immunity’ ” so even those who cannot be vaccinated for various reasons remain safe from infection because there is no opportunity for disease spread within the community. Although vaccinations can sometimes cause mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site or feverishness, these are well worth enduring since the risks associated with not vaccinating far outweigh any potential discomfort experienced during immunisation itself. Vaccination is one of our most powerful tools for preventing infectious diseases and protecting public health; without it we would be unable to eradicate some organisms entirely and control outbreaks quickly should they occur.
