Prejudice and discrimination are two different phenomena, yet they both play a significant role in the lives of many people. Prejudice is defined as an unjustified negative attitude towards individuals or groups based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any other characteristic that is not shared by the prejudiced individual(s). Discrimination occurs when someone acts upon this prejudice and unfairly treats an individual due to one or more of these characteristics. While prejudice has been around for centuries, it still continues to have a major impact on society today. At its core, prejudice involves making assumptions about individuals before actually getting to know them; it can be seen in our everyday interactions with others. People may make snap judgments based on stereotypes rather than taking the time to get to know those who differ from themselves. This form of bias can often lead to unfair treatment in school systems, workplaces and even social situations. Without proper education about diversity and cultural acceptance topics like racism continue to exist at large scales throughout societies today. Discrimination goes hand-in-hand with prejudice and is typically observed as unequal treatment based off of someones identity factors such as age, race/ethnicity, gender/sexual orientation etcetera . This type of behavior can manifest itself in derogatory language used against certain groups (i.e.: racial slurs), employment practices which exclude potential applicants due their identity factors & denying access into buildings or establishments because someone looks out-of-place”. It’s important to recognize that while many forms of discrimination are illegal within countries around the world there is still work yet done when it comes down fighting against this issue for good – meaning prevention over punishment needs increased focus & attention if we truly want lasting change . The fight begins by raising awareness & educating people about why respect & understanding should be given regardless whether one agrees with another person’s lifestyle choices everyone deserves basic human rights & dignity no matter what. The only way forward lies through actively challenging prejudices whenever they arise instead of allowing them turn into discriminatory actions ” something each individual must strive for every day.
