What do you think is a reasonable wage for a footballer? I am here today to discuss this continuous debate. Some people say that this matter is becoming out of hand whereas, others may say they deserve their pay due to how hard they worked for it.

When football first started the wages were low at about £4 a week. It was only until foreign players began to arrive at clubs when the wages began to increase. George Best was one of the first players to be earning massive amounts each week. Since then the wages have continued to rise to about £500,000 - £600,000 per week in the top flight division (Barclays Premier League).

Many people believe that footballers get paid a fair amount considering they have devoted their lives to football. Also, they had to

compete against billions of people to get the job as the sport is the most popular sport in the world. However, others think that they're a bunch of over payed hooligans. They usually only see footballers' lives as just kicking a ball around for a few hours a week and earning a lot of money for doing it.

Footballers just don't kick a ball around for a few hours a week thou, they have to work on their: fitness; skills; strength and self a steam. Also, on top of that, they have to look after their family so they hardly have anytime left over.

Moving swiftly on, Ryan Giggs, Manchester United's left midfielder, told ITV's news at ten "There is plenty of money in the game but the majority of the players deserve it," he also believes that majority of top flight

players deserve their massive wages as they are constantly surrounded and provoked by the paparazzi. Team mate Gary Neville, right back, does not feel the cash is excessive given the contracts being paid to televise the Premier League, which bring in well over £1.5billion.

People agree with this as it is a global game which is helping our economy by paying highly talented individuals a massive amount of money which is spent on helping charities and constantly being pumped back into the economy. Others may disagree because they believe that people that work hard and are good at their job should be paid high wages and that they could help charities and pump it back into the economy.

Many fans nowadays believe that year by year players are just playing for the money and aren't taking the wonderful game seriously. Bonuses shouldn't be allowed because it takes away the love for the game. And it just encourages the players to score more goals but it shouldn't need more money to encourage you to score more goals. It should be your desire for the game you play which makes you score more goals. Nowadays there is hardly any respect or loyalty for the club you play for.

On the other hand there are still players that have desire for the game such as: Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand. All these players play for their pride instead of a hefty wage at the end of the week. David Beckham went to America to try to and take the amazing game to them. He wasn't interested in the money but he was interested in showing America what

a beautiful game football is.

Some people say that the premiership should introduce a scheme like the lower leagues. In the lower leagues the maximum they can spend on wages is 60% of their turnover. However others disagree because in the premiership there are many more talented individuals than the lower leagues and there is a big leap in ability so the premiership players should be entitled to a big wage.

Many supporters are unhappy with the way ticket prices have increased due to the high wages of the footballers. The average match-day expenditure is £89.53 and has increased by around 35%. Other supporters are happy to pay the amount as their team needs the money to stay or become good.
