It appears that he's quits because he's trying to impress the girls but the real reason is because he was searching for personal gain and satisfaction. When he takes the side with the girls he momentarily rises to meet their standards and the standards of the upper class. He believes that quitting his job is one step closer to getting them to believe he belongs in the upper class and to achieving that goal. He was obviously lower class- where he was really unhappy, dead end job.
