congress debated and then adopted the compromise of 1850, which allowed: -california to be free - strengthened fugitive slave laws (slaves must be returned if found) -provided that new US territories could choose weather to adopt slavery -ended the slave trade in DC

-northerners passed personal liberty laws to combat the fugitive slave act angering southerners -the kansas-nebraska act nullified the missouri compromise and caused some northerners and southerners to set up anti slavery and pro slavery governments in kansas -nebraska territory broke into kansas and nebraska giving each other territory to allow or not allow slavery

-politics parties disintegrated and formed around the issue of slavery, further dividing north and south -the dread scott decision outraged northerners and made more determined for abolition -john brown launched an unsuccessful attempt to capture the arsenal at harpers ferry and stage a slave rebellion -some northerners supported browns raid but many southerners prepared for war

-lincoln was elected without any southerner votes -ran against 3 others; douglass, bell, and breckinridge -many southerners believed that they had lost all influence in govt -7 southern states seceded from the union and fought for control of federal forts in south -texas, louisiana, alabama, mississippi, south carolina, georgia, and florida formed the confederate states of america
