answer
Compare Henry VIII's motives for breaking away from the Catholic Church with those of Martin Luther. Martin Luther believed that the pope and Catholic Church had destroyed the real meaning of the Gospel for the a thousand years. He believed that gaining salvation was not through good works, but by faith alone. Luther also called for a clergy to marry, which went against the long-standing requirement of the Catholic Church that its clergy remain celibate, or unmarried. King Henry Vlll wanted to have a male heir and a new wife, Anne Boleyn. The pope didn't agree with his wishes, so King Henry was upset and broke away from the Church. So, Henry turned to England's highest church courts.
