question
Origin of Orlando-Pelletier's Theory
answer
Collected data while observing nursing students and patients, while also serving as research associate and principle investigator of federal project grant entitled "Integration of Mental Health Concepts in a Basic Curriculum" Nurse-patient relationship is reciprocal, or the actions of one affect the other Patient participation and intelligent nurse deliberation are pivotal in nursing process Nursing profession is distinct from medical profession "Nursing action is derived from the patient's immediate experience and immediate needs for help."
question
3 concepts of Nursing Process Theory
answer
Nursing process is set in motion by patient behavior. Patient behavior stimulates a nurse reaction, which is the start of the nursing process. Professional nursing actions are nursing-care activities that result from deliberative activity. A nurse may act in one of two ways when providing care: Automatic or deliberative.
question
steps in appropriate nurse reaction
answer
The nurse perceives the behavior through any of the senses. The perception leads to an automatic thought. The thought produces an automatic feeling. The nurse shares reactions with the patient to ascertain whether perceptions are accurate or inaccurate. The nurse consciously deliberates about personal reactions and patient input in order to produce professional deliberative actions based on mindful assessment rather than automatic reactions.
question
2 types of nurse action
answer
1. Automatic -Does not meet the criteria for professional nursing behavior. -Stems from nursing behaviors that are performed to satisfy a directive other than the patient's need for help. 2. Deliberative -Professional nursing actions -Results from correct identification of patient needs by validation of nurse's reaction to patient behavior -Nurse explores action's meaning with patient and its relevance to meeting need -The nurse validates action's effectiveness immediately after completing it. -The nurse is free of stimuli unrelated to the patient's need (when action is taken).
question
Orlando-Pelletier's Origami
answer
Simple design with three large folds representing three steps: -Patient behavior -Nurse reaction -Nurse action Subsequent smaller folds include other assumptions associated with the theory. Finished object might resemble silhouette of two people connected to one another Alludes to the ongoing nurse and client interaction required for deliberative care to effectively take place
question
Assumptions
answer
Nursing is both allied with medicine and a distinct profession separate from other healthcare disciplines. Professional (deliberative) nursing has a distinct outcome product from other professions. The nurse's mind is the major helping tool. Each nurse-patient interaction is unique. The nurse's practice is improved by self-reflection. The nurse-patient interaction constitutes a dynamic whole. The actual nurse-patient encounter is a major source of nursing knowledge. Evidence of relieving distress is determined by the client's observable behavior. Promptly addressing a patient's need for help is important because the length of time a patient's needs go unmet influences the degree of distress.
