Cell Organelles & Functions

Vacuoles
In plant cells vacuoles also store nutrients, and regulates turgor pressure in the cell

Nucleus
Found in Eukaryotic cells. DNA is found here, in the chromosomes. RNA is also here.

Nucleolus
Inside the nucleus, this organelle produces ribosomes.

Cytoplasm
Term for the cell gel – all the organelles float in this.

mitochondria
called the powerhouse of the cell

Centriole
paired structures that play a role in the movement of chromosomes during cell division (mitosis/meiosis)
These two organelles are arranged in a perpendicular fashion.

Golgi apparatus or golgi bodies
these process, sort and deliver proteins

Lysosome
contains enzymes necessary for intracellular digestion.

Cell Membrane
controls what enters and leaves the cells

Mitochondria
Provides energy to cell to move, divide, produce secretory products, and contract. Cellular respiration, converts glucose energy to ATP.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Transports and modifies organelles, highway for cell. Processes lipids, fats

and such.

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Collects proteins synthesized in the attached ribosomes where they are collected in and transported throughout the cell. Transportation highway for the cell.

Ribosome
Site of protein synthesis.

Cytoskeleton
Helps maintain cell shape. Its primary job is it allows the cell to move internally and externally.

Cell Wall:
All plant cells have this. It is a protective wall made of polysaccharides (cellulose).

Nuclear Pores
Holes that allow RNA and other molecules into and out of the nucleus.

Centrosomes
Produces and organizes microtubules.

Chloroplast
Organelle/site of photosynthesis in ALL plants and photosynthetic protists and bacteria.

Cilia
tiny hair-like projections used for movement/locomotion

Flagella
whiplike structure used for movement/locomotion

mitochondrion
site of cellular respiration

cell membrane
This structure acts as a protective barrier to the uncontrolled flow of water. Membrane is made complex by the numerous proteins crucial to its activity.

ribosome
Organelle where transfer RNA brings along with it a codon and amino acid in order to build protein.

cell wall
Structure that maintains the shape of certain cells (bacteria, plants and fungi ONLY) and creates a protective barrier.

chlorophyll
green pigment found in plants
