More invasions in the late 800 & 900's; Vikings from the north; Muslim from the south; Magyors from the east; Empire unable to withstand attackes, By 900 no central power or authority remained; Led to Feudalism

His land lacked resource so he managed personal land; only guaranteed source of wealth; strengthened relationship w/ church which was powerful at this time; constant warfare that kept noble occupied and rich, empire called Carolingions

name for the renaissance started by Charlemagne to improve writing and reading in his empire; rebirth of art and learning; he invested in education, construction of new palaces; limited extent since clergy was involved
