Application for a Master’s Degree in Social Work Essay Example
During a significant part of my life, I held the belief that I would receive instead of give. This mindset developed when I was young and residing in a disadvantaged rural region. Even after finishing high school, this conviction continued to be deeply rooted in me because of the societal fact that my parents' poverty determined my own future. Consequently, we depended on kind-hearted individuals who generously donated to us, an experience that brought me immense happiness.
During my upbringing, I encountered various challenges that had the potential to impede my future success. However, by altering my perspective on wealth and poverty, I was able to overcome these obstacles. It was during my time at university that I realized the power I possessed to bring about the changes I desired most in life. My primary objective became attaining independence, self-sufficiency, a
...nd serving as an inspiration for young individuals within my community.
This newfound determination led me to dedicate myself fully towards achieving success while simultaneously making a positive impact similar to those who had influenced me before. My focus primarily revolved around academics as I tirelessly worked towards enhancing not only my own circumstances but also improving the lives of other underprivileged youths residing in my vicinity.
During my first year, I had an impressive performance that showed my goal was becoming a reality. Both professors and classmates praised me, which fueled my determination to keep going. Unfortunately, in my final year, I made a big mistake by accepting a job as an untrained instructor at a small private academy. This decision didn't match my plans, but I needed the money to support myself while studying at university.
As a result, I faced many challenges trying to balance teaching and pursuing my degree. The workload of school assignments, lesson planning, and additional duties given by the principal took up most of my time and left little or no opportunity for dedicated studying.
In addition, I faced challenges in managing an untrained job which made it hard for me to prioritize my degree classes. Consequently, my academic performance suffered in my final year and I did not earn any credits. Regrettably, the closure of the school resulted in me losing my job just two months before graduation. This sequence of events seemed like the shattering of my aspirations and left me feeling overwhelmed with despair. However, after careful consideration, I chose to pursue a social work degree at Barry University.
Despite my potential, I was admitted to the university swiftly in order to pursue my dreams. However, due to my limited teaching experience and disadvantaged background, it became evident that studying social work was the only way for me to achieve my goals. Therefore, I am applying for admission into Arizona State University's online master's degree program in social work. Although my GPA is not high, I want the admissions committee to understand that it does not accurately represent my abilities. This is mainly because I had to overcome challenges while balancing my responsibilities as a teacher and dedicating myself to my studies at the same time.
Furthermore, my performance in the initial years undoubtedly proves this beyond any doubt. Although I take complete responsibility for my failure, I am a quick learner and my past experience has emphasized the major error I made.
I am willing to
adapt and will never make the same mistake again.
Being an online student enables me to efficiently manage my time and concentrate solely on my studies without needing to be physically present. Moreover, the flexibility of the programs allows me to multitask and put in additional effort. I firmly believe that ASU is crucial for my future as it provides comprehensive training and conducts extensive research on significant issues impacting human existence. Currently, I am not employed as initially planned, which grants me the opportunity to devote my time and energy to my studies and demonstrate reliability despite having a low GPA.
In my efforts to raise awareness among young people about strategies for achieving self-sufficiency and increasing employment rates, I will leverage this opportunity. By engaging with students and employed youth in my area, I have come to understand the significance of providing relevant skills and knowledge through proper training at high schools and universities, as a means to attain economic independence. With experience in both fields, I aim to collaborate with education stakeholders in addressing the issue of insufficient funding for education, especially in rural areas. This way, all students and young individuals can access equal opportunities. Additionally, my ability to adapt and establish connections with people from diverse backgrounds strengthens my suitability for this task. My commitment lies in advocating for a new perspective on self-reliance that inspires and empowers individuals.
Being able to quickly learn and effectively communicate with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds is one of my strengths. However, I do have a weakness of sometimes rushing towards goals without considering natural progression. Additionally, I tend to oversimplify situations and apply them universally,
even when they may not accurately reflect real-life circumstances. My main passion and priority is making a positive impact wherever I am. I strongly believe in continuous growth and dislike stagnation, although it may not always be achievable.
