question
2015 Q1: Many high schools, colleges, and universities have honor codes or honor systems: sets of rules or principles that are intended to cultivate integrity. These rules or principles often take the form of written positions on practices like cheating, stealing, and plagiarizing as well as on the consequences of violating the established codes. Carefully read the following six sources, including the introductory information for each source. Then synthesize information from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-developed argument for your own position on whether your school should establish, maintain, revise, or eliminate an honor code or honor system. Your argument should be the focus of your essay. Use the sources to develop your argument and explain the reasoning for it. Avoid merely summarizing the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. You may cite the sources as Source A, Source B, etc., or by using the descriptions in parentheses.
answer
Write a well-written essay on whether my high school (Doral Academy) should drop, keep, or revise their set of school rules that maintain honor such as no cheating, no plagiarism, etc.
question
2015 Q2: On the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., labor union organizer and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez published an article in the magazine of a religious organization devoted to helping those in need. Read the following excerpt from the article carefully. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze the rhetorical choices Chavez makes to develop his argument about nonviolent resistance.
answer
Write about how Cesar Chavez effectively convinces the audience to consider his view on nonviolent resistance. Must also analyze purpose deeper and perhaps syntax.
question
2015 Q3: An anthropologist studying first-year students at a university in the United States writes that friendly phrases like "How are you?," "Nice to meet you," and "Let's get in touch" communicate politeness rather than literal intent. What, if anything, is the value or function of such polite speech? In a well-written essay, develop your position on the value or function of polite speech in a culture or community with which you are familiar. Use appropriate evidence from your reading, experience, or observations to support your argument.
answer
Effectively convince the audience that your beliefs on the value or function of polite speech in society are logical and correct. It is more effective to use real-life experiences as evidence as this is a more personal/philosophical prompt and, unless one can remember surveys or articles written on this (which I can't), there is no other evidence.
question
2014 Q1: Many recent college graduates have faced record levels of unemployment. This situation has led people to question what they value about higher education. Some high school students and their parents are wondering if a college education is worth the cost. Others, however, believe that a college education prepares students for more than just a job or career. Carefully read the following six sources, including the introductory information for each source. Then synthesize information from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-developed essay that evaluates whether college is worth its cost. Your argument should be the focus of your essay. Use the sources to develop your argument and explain the reasoning for it. Avoid merely summarizing the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. You may cite the sources as Source A, Source B, etc., or by using the descriptions in parentheses.
answer
Use sources to prove whether college is worth the expensive cost needed to go there. While it is required for the writer to synthesize the sources, this prompt is flexible and the writer is able to assert their own opinions (which is that higher education should not be pursued by everyone, but only by people who truly need it for their chosen profession) while providing ample evidence. If view is a less-supported one, close reading and deeper analysis is required to gather sufficient evidence.
question
2014 Q2: In the following letter, Abigail Adams (1744-1818) writes to her son John Quincy Adams, who is traveling abroad with his father, John Adams, a United States diplomat and later the country's second president. Read the letter carefully. Then, in a well-developed essay, analyze the rhetorical strategies Adams uses to advise her son. Support your analysis with specific references to the text.
answer
Write about the effective ways Adams uses to convince her son to accept and implement her advice; also speak of purpose, syntax, and mood when it is appropriate (i.e speak of purpose while analyzing rhetorical strategies and talk about syntax/mood if syntax/mood is notably unique and adds to rhetoric). (Syntax and mood are not the only other rhetorical elements that may be written about).
question
2014 Q3: Authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman published "The Creativity Crisis" in Newsweek.com in July 2010. They reported that the Torrance Test, a test of creativity that has been administered to millions of people worldwide in 50 languages, indicates that the public's "creativity quotient" has steadily crept downward since 1990. In their article, Bronson and Merryman cite the claim of Professor Kyung Hee Kim at the College of William and Mary: "It's very clear, and the decrease is very significant." Kim reports that it is the scores of younger children in America—from kindergarten through sixth grade—for whom the decline is "most serious." Bronson and Merryman state that "[t]he potential consequences are sweeping. The necessity of human ingenuity is undisputed. A recent IBM poll of 1,500 CEOs identified creativity as the No. 1 'leadership competency' of the future. Yet it's not just about sustaining our nation's economic growth. All around us are matters of national and international importance that are crying out for creative solutions, from saving the Gulf of Mexico to bringing peace to Afghanistan to delivering health care. Such solutions emerge from a healthy marketplace of ideas, sustained by a populace constantly contributing original ideas and receptive to the ideas of others." One possible approach to this reputed decline in creativity is to explicitly teach creative thinking in school. Write to your school board explaining what you mean by creativity and arguing for or against the creation of a class in creativity.
answer
*Note that creativity is being used as synonym of ingenuity in this prompt. Write to convince THE SCHOOL BOARD why there should be or should not be a class on creativity, and what creativity means (ingenuity). This is a personal/philosophical prompt that can be most strongly supported by personal experience and self-learned life lessons as there are few other common sources of evidence that can be easily implemented. DO NOT FORGET THE AUDIENCE (i.e. the school board).
question
2013 Q1: The need to memorialize events or people is complex; in some cases, monuments honor moments of great achievement, while in other cases, monuments pay homage to deep sacrifice. A monument's size, location, and materials are all considerations in planning and creating a memorial to the past. Read the following seven sources carefully, including the introductory information for each source. Then, in a wellorganized essay that synthesizes at least three of the sources for support, examine the factors a group or agency should consider in memorializing an event or person and in creating a monument. Make sure your argument is central; use the sources to illustrate and support your reasoning. Avoid merely summarizing the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. You may cite the sources as Source A, Source B, etc., or by using the descriptions in parentheses.
answer
Synthesize the sources to convince a group or agency what the most important factors are when considering the memorializing of an event or person and in creating a monument. DO NOT FORGET YOUR AUDIENCE ( an agency). This is an argument. Do NOT write this as an expository essay. LEAVE THIS PROMPT FOR LAST. IT IS CLEAR THAT IT WILL BE DIFFICULT SO SPEND THE MAJORITY OF YOUR TIME ON THE OTHER TWO PROMPTS, that is, unless the other two are even harder than this one. Good luck.
question
2013 Q2: The passage below is from Last Child in the Woods (2008) by Richard Louv. Read the passage carefully. Then, in a well-developed essay, analyze the rhetorical strategies Louv uses to develop his argument about the separation between people and nature. Support your analysis with specific references to the text.
answer
Analyze the ways Richard Louv effectively develops his arguement about the separation between people and nature. Speak about primary rhetorical strategy while including more secondary rhetorical strategies to strengthen your argument.
question
2013 Q3: For centuries, prominent thinkers have pondered the relationship between ownership and the development of self (identity), ultimately asking the question, "What does it mean to own something?" Plato argues that owning objects is detrimental to a person's character. Aristotle claims that ownership of tangible goods helps to develop moral character. Twentieth-century philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre proposes that ownership extends beyond objects to include intangible things as well. In Sartre's view, becoming proficient in some skill and knowing something thoroughly means that we "own" it. Think about the differing views of ownership. Then write an essay in which you explain your position on the relationship between ownership and sense of self. Use appropriate evidence from your reading, experience, or observations to support your argument.
answer
Explain your stance on the relationship between ownership (interpret this as you will, no specific analysis specified) and sense of self. Prompt provides some evidence of respected historic philospohers and their own views on this topic; make sure to include these in your argument! This is a completely philosophical essay and will be most effectively argued by using self-learned life lessons and personal experience (for me, not for everyone).
question
2012 Q1: The United States Postal Service (USPS) has delivered communications for more than two centuries. During the nineteenth century, the USPS helped to expand the boundaries of the United States by providing efficient and reliable communication across the country. Between 1790 and 1860 alone, the number of post offices in the United States grew from 75 to over 28,000. With this growth came job opportunities for postal workers and a boom in the cross-country rail system. The twentieth century brought substantial growth to the USPS, including large package delivery and airmail. Over the past decade, however, total mail volume has decreased considerably as competition from electronic mail and various package delivery companies has taken business away from the USPS. The loss of revenue has prompted the USPS to consider cutting back on delivery days and other services. Carefully read the following seven sources, including the introductory information for each source. Then synthesize information from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-developed essay that argues a clear position on whether the USPS should be restructured to meet the needs of a changing world, and if so, how. Make sure your argument is central; use the sources to illustrate and support your reasoning. Avoid merely summarizing the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. You may cite the sources as Source A, Source B, etc., or by using the descriptions in parentheses.
answer
Argue whether the USPS should or should not be changed to fit changing needs of the world. Synthesize sources, but prompt also provides basic evidence that can be used to lay the foundation of your argument. This prompt is incredibly dull (my opinion) and as such, the writer must work harder to gather evidence from the sources in order to provide a cogent argument that seems as if the writer actually cares. Leave this one for last if other two essays are more inspiring.
question
2012 Q2: On April 10, 1962, as the United States was emerging from a recession, the nation's largest steel companies raised steel prices by 3.5 percent. President John F. Kennedy, who had repeatedly called for stable prices and wages as part of a program of national sacrifice during a period of economic distress, held a news conference on April 11, 1962, which he opened with the following commentary regarding the hike in steel prices. Read Kennedy's remarks carefully. Then write an essay in which you analyze the rhetorical strategies President Kennedy uses to achieve his purpose. Support your analysis with specific references to the text.
answer
Analyze the effective strategies Kennedy uses to convince the audience ( the United States, possibly the entire world, must provide support if the latter is the case) of his beliefs and achieve his purpose. Prompt is vague and seems slightly contradicting so make sure to implement close reading in order to see the implicit and analyze what Kennedy is truly saying. If writer speaks of the implicit, make sure to provide ample support.
question
2012 Q3: Consider the distinct perspectives expressed in the following statements. If you develop the absolute sense of certainty that powerful beliefs provide, then you can get yourself to accomplish virtually anything, including those things that other people are certain are impossible. William Lyon Phelps, American educator, journalist, and professor (1865-1943) I think we ought always to entertain our opinions with some measure of doubt. I shouldn't wish people dogmatically to believe any philosophy, not even mine. Bertrand Russell, British author, mathematician, and philosopher (1872-1970) In a well-organized essay, take a position on the relationship between certainty and doubt. Support your argument with appropriate evidence and examples.
answer
Prompt is vague. It leaves much to the writer's interpretation. Answer the question as best as possible, as prompt seems to be asking the writer to argue his position on the relationship between certainty and doubt of a person's beliefs. Use personal experience.
question
2011 Q1: Locavores are people who have decided to eat locally grown or produced products as much as possible. With an eye to nutrition as well as sustainability (resource use that preserves the environment), the locavore movement has become widespread over the past decade. Imagine that a community is considering organizing a locavore movement. Carefully read the following seven sources, including the introductory information for each source. Then synthesize information from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-developed essay that identifies the key issues associated with the locavore movement and examines their implications for the community. Make sure that your argument is central; use the sources to illustrate and support your reasoning. Avoid merely summarizing the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. You may cite the sources as Source A, Source B, etc., or by using the descriptions in parentheses.
answer
Synthesize sources to argue why or why not the locavore movement should be followed and strengthened. MAKE SURE THERE IS A COUNTER ARGUMENT! Prompt implies that there will be bias when readers grade essay, but disregard this. Views that are well supported will be rewarded.
question
2011 Q2: Florence Kelley (1859-1932) was a United States social worker and reformer who fought successfully for child labor laws and improved conditions for working women. She delivered the following speech before the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia on July 22, 1905. Read the speech carefully. Then write an essay in which you analyze the rhetorical strategies Kelley uses to convey her message about child labor to her audience. Support your analysis with specific references to the text.
answer
Analyze the rhetorical strategies Kelley uses in her speech to the National American Woman Suffrage Association to convince her audience of her view on child labor. Prompt seems simple, this should be first or second essay depending on the rest of the essays.
question
2011 Q3: The following passage is from Rights of Man, a book written by the pamphleteer Thomas Paine in 1791. Born in England, Paine was an intellectual, a revolutionary, and a supporter of American independence from England. Read the passage carefully. Then write an essay that examines the extent to which Paine's characterization of America holds true today. Use appropriate evidence to support your argument. If there is a country in the world, where concord, according to common calculation, would be least expected, it is America. Made up, as it is, of people from different nations, accustomed to different forms and habits of government, speaking different languages, and more different in their modes of worship, it would appear that the union of such a people was impracticable; but by the simple operation of constructing government on the principles of society and the rights of man, every difficulty retires, and all the parts are brought into cordial unison. There, the poor are not oppressed, the rich are not privileged. . . . Their taxes are few, because their government is just; and as there is nothing to render them wretched, there is nothing to engender riots and tumults.
answer
This is structured like more of a Q2 than a Q3. Voice will still be rewarded, but evidence must now be drawn from both personal experiences and the passage given. Analyze purpose of the passage and explain why it supports or does not support your point of view.
