Fall 1952 ---Saboor tells his children Abdullah and Pari a story of a demon that tests a father. The father in the story must give up his favorite son to save the family. The father can not forget his son so he tries to bring him back. The Div tells the father that son does not remember the father and that he is happy in his new life. The father walks away because he knows it is the best for his son. The Div rewards the father by giving him a potion that makes him forget his son. Abdullah is listens to the story. Pari falls asleep.

Fall 1952---Saboor takes Pari in a red wagon to a long walk to Kabul. Abdullah insists on going with Pari and Saboor. Pari and Abdullah are very close. They meet up with their step uncle Nabi who works for a wealthy family in Kabul. Abdullah becomes upset when he realizes that Pari was not coming home with him and his father. Pari would be staying with the family forever. Saboor is so sad he never tells another story.

Parwanna is jealous of her sister's Masooma's great beauty. She feels unworthy and neglected because she not beautiful. Parwanna is in love with Saboor. Saboor is famous for his stories. Parwanna thinks that Saboor is in love with Masooma. Parwanna pushes Masooma out of a tree causing her to be paralyzed. Parwanna feels so much guilty that she becomes Masooma's caregiver for many years. Masooma has Parwanna help her to commit suicide, so that Parwanna will be free to marry Saboor. Parwanna marries Saboor after his wife died. She does not love Pari and Abdullah as much as her own sons.

Parwanna's brother Nabi works for a wealthy in Kabul, the Wahdatis. Nabi is in love with Nila Wahdati. She is an unhappy half french woman that writes poems about lovers. She wears modern clothes. Nabi arranges for Pari to adopted by the Wahdatis. Nila and Mr. Suleiman Wahdati are happy with Pari. Suleiman has a stroke. Nila leaves with Pari and moves to Paris. Nabi becomes Suleiman's caregiver for many years. Nabi finds out that Suleiman is in love with him. Mr. Suleiman dies and leaves Nabi everything.

Spring 2003, Idris and Timur are cousins that used to play near the Wahdatis' house when they were young. Idris is now a doctor he is uneasy with Timur because Timur is friendly and outgoing. Timur and Idris go back to Afghan to see about their parent's house. Idris makes friends with a deformed girl, Rhosi. Rhosi was hit in the head with an axe by her uncle. Idris promises Rhosi that he will be back to get her for the surgery. Idris goes back to America with good intentions, but slowly gives up. Idris meets Rhosi again years later at a book signing. Rhosi signs his book ...telling him not to worry. Her nurse and Timur took care of the surgery.

starts in 1974. Pari and her mother live in Paris. Pari studies Math in college. Her mother, Nila, gives an interview about her poetry. Her mother, Nila, gets involved with a handsome man Julien. Julien is using NIla to get to Pari. Ten years later, Pari and Julien started dating. Nila committed suicide. Pari blamed herself. Colette sets Pari up with Eric. Eric is kind. Pari and Eric get married and have three children. Eric dies of a stroke leaving Pari a widow at 48 years old. Pari's children grow up and move out. Dr. Markos calls Pari and reads a letter that Nabi wrote to her. Nabi left Pari his home in Kabul. Pari starts to remember some of the missing pieces of her life in Afghan.

Adel admires his father the Commander because he is a war hero. His father has Adel and his mother move from Kabul. Adel an his mother are bored and lonely in their new luxury home that is guarded by armed guards. Adel later learns from a friend Gholam that his father has seized someone else's lands and his business is heroin. Adel also realizes his mother knew this but did not tell him. Adel also realizes his father is a criminal that has people hurt and killed. Adel accepts these things because he unable to change them.

On the island of Tinos. Dr. Markos' mother Odhelia is a bitter woman that is upset that her friend Madeleine has left her deformed daughter for Odhelia to take care. Madeleine ran off with a film director. Madeleine is selfish and dramatic. She makes her daughter, Thalia, wear a mask to cover her face. Ophelia and the deformed girl, Thalia come to love each other. Thalia was attacked by a dog when she was young and suffered deformities to the face. Thalia and Markos become close and Thalia pays for Markos to become a plastic surgeon. Thalia inspires Markos to do charity work around the world. Markos and his mother did not always get along. Markos returns to Tinos and realizes that his mother has been proudly following his accomplishments. She would never leave him like Thalia's mother had left her.

2010 in California, Abdullah and his wife Sultana have a daughter named Pari. She was named after Abdullah's sister Pari. Pari's mother dies of cancer. Pari gives up a scholarship to study art in Baltimore to take care of her father Abdullah. Abdullah has dementia. Pari is trapped into this life because her father did not want to lose her like he lost his sister. Abdullah's sister Pari comes to meet with Abdullah after a trip to Kabul. Abdullah does not recognize her. Pari visits her aunt's family in France
