In the field of health care, acute care refers to the time sensitive and individually oriented medical approaches which aim at addressing a patient’s needs in a critical stage. Some of the measures include administering emergency medicine, critical care, conducting pre-hospital emergency carte among others. In the film ‘Wit’ by Margaret Edson, Dr.Vivian suffers from cancer and implications of several chemotherapy effects all of which are terminal illnesses. It is unfortunate to realize that almost all the available medical practitioners had given up on addressing Vivian’s health situation and Susie Monahan who is her nurse takes it as her personal responsibility to take care of Vivian (Edson 1999). Since Vivian’s condition is getting worse as time progresses, nurse Susie treats her with a very high degree of kindness and assists Vivian in making a
...decision concerning the do not resuscitate (DNR) order which is an example of acute care. This is apparently a short-term patient stabilization measure which was an urgent approach to save Vivian’s condition although she eventually succumbs to it.
On the other hand, disease burden can be evaluated based on grounds like the extend of quality adjusted life years, mortality, the costs incurred among others. The film depicts Dr. Vivian having spent a substantial amount of time in the hospital which apparently translated into financial burden on her or probably her family. Vivian’s normal life had been compromised and her life turned into adjusted life since she could no longer live without the use of medicine and this is an example of disease burden (Eads 2002). The burden which the disease had inflicted on Vivian made her have memories of her former life
which is apparent in the various episodes which most probably implies that those were her best moments thus her present condition was completely burdensome. Eventually, Dr. Vivian succumbs to death and this is the final implication of the disease on her and this too is a disease burden.
