Due to extremism; such as laws and doctrines created during the time, and failures of leadership; such as compromises, the civil war was not preventable.

State rights- Congress had no right to prohibit slavery in any acquired state - can't take away "property"

Extremist- tried to incite slave riot at harpers ferry- got arrested Viewed as martyr in north & terrorist in south

Sumner insulted brooks cousin & South Carolina = brooks beat sumner with a cane. South sent him more canes & weren't able to expel him from senate

Anti- slavery Got Lincoln to change opinion on slavery Shared horrors of slavery= made more people aware of evils of slavery

Clinging on to manifest destiny which led to increase and worry over slavery and the decision over slave state or Freestate
