Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania Economy: became major producers of rye, oats, potatoes, whieat and barley Settled by people arriving from Europe in search of a better life.

Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire Economy: fishing, shipbuilding and trade, some small farms Founded mostly to escape religious persecution

Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Economy: agriculturally based, plantations of tobacco,rice and indigo Relied on slave labor and indentured servants

(1754-1763) War fought in the colonies between the English and the French for possession of the Ohio Valley area. The English won. The French were moved out. Created poor relations with native peoples. Caused the British gov't to go into debt which resulted in deciding to tax the colonies and helped spark the American Revolution.

passed in 1651. British attempt to dominate international trade. banned foreign ships from transporting goods to the colonies and from transporting goods to Britain from elsewhere in Europe. Good for the colonists who were legally able to provide goods for Britain.

Algonquian, Iroquois, Plains, Pueblos, Pacific Coast, Far North Tribes

Inhabited eastern part of the U.S. Nomadic hunter/gatherer tribes. Taught colonists to grow corn, squash and beans. Lived in wigwams. Noted members included Pocohantas and Squanto.

Inhabited the northeastern woodlands of the U.S. A settled, agricultural society. Lived in rectangular longhouses. Part of the Iroquois Confederacy along with the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca.

Inhabited the land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. Nomadic. Lived in Teepees and followed the buffalo herds. Included the Sioux, Cheyenne, Comanche and Blackfoot. Noted members were Sacagawea, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull.

Inhabited the southwest region of the U.S. Built stone and adobe homes. Domesticated animals and grew corn and beans. Included the Hopi, the Zuni and the Acomoa.

Inhabited the northwest Pacific coast. Tribes included the Tlingit, Chinook, Salish and Nez Perce. Lived in large rectangular homes and ate, fish, deer, native berries and roots. Totem-pole builders. Chief Joseph tried to outrun the U.S. Cavalry to get his people to safety in Canada. He did not succeed.

Inhabited the far northern regions of the U.S. and Canada. Tribes include the Aleuts and Inuit. Homes were igloos or skin tents. Builders of kayaks and umiaks. Hunted caribous, seals, whales and walrus.
