AP Psych Erikson Studies to Social Clock

First social experience of world is based in fulfillment. Baby learns whether or not they can trust provider for ther needs.

Next stage, toddlers start to exert their will over their own bodies for the first time. Autonomy is control over body, and Erikson thought that potty training was an early effort at gaining control.

If we trust those around us and feel control of our bodies, we feel a natural curiosity about our surroundings. Children want to understand the world. Take initiative in problem solving and ask many questions. If encouraged, we feel comfortable about expressing our curiosity through rest if stages. If those around us are scolding, we learn to feel guilty about asking questions.

Stage is beginning of our formal education. Preschool and kindergarten were mostly about play and entertainment. In the 1st grade, we're asked to produce work that is educated. We expect to perform as well as our peers at activities. If we feel as good at these activities as our peers, we feel competent. If we realize we're behind or can't do as well as our peers, having an inferiority complex, we feel anxious about performance in area throughout rest of stages.

In adolescence, our main social task is to discover what social identity we are lost comfy with. Thinks that a person might naturally try our different roles before they found one that best fits their internal sense of self.

Young adults who establish stable identities then must figure out how to balance their ties and efforts between work and relationships with other people. How much time should we spend on our own and how much time with family?

By the time we reach Erikson's age we start to look critically at our life. We want to make sure that we create a life that we want for ourselves and families. We might try to change our lives to make sure things go as planned.

Toward the end of life, look back at accomplishments and decide if we satisfied with them or not.

Research in which same people are restudied and rested over a long period.
