question
Why do you want to become a PA?
answer
-I want to be a PA because I want to be able to practice medicine with a high level of autonomy, but be able to reference back to my supervising physician when needed. -I want to be a PA because I want to increase my scope of practice and I want to be more involved with my patients. Although I highly respect nurses and the work they do ( I observe this first-hand since I work with them at the hospice, the health center, and the emergency department), I want to be involved in the more diagnostic aspect of medicine. I know being a PA rather than a doctor, nurse, NP I can increase that scope of practice sooner, with less debt, as well as incorporating some things that are of interest to me like the science behind medicine and the team based approach. I'm also drawn the values behind the profession like making healthcare more patient centered with team medicine, the importance of preventative services and increasing accessibility where it is needed like in medically underserved areas. -As I have matured and experienced more while working in various jobs in healthcare, I know for certain that medicine is for me. I have observed and interviewed individuals in several healthcare fields--physicians, nurses, NPs, and PAs--and found that I am most drawn to the PA profession for many reasons. First, I like the collaborative aspect of being a PA and working in a health-care team. Yet, I also like the autonomy the PA profession would provide me. I am impressed by the number of specialties available to PAs. Finally, I have a good deal of respect for the profession and was very impressed by the PAs I shadowed and have spoken with.

I have been shadowing several PAs over the past several years to gain as much knowledge about the field as possible and each experience confirms I have chosen the right path. -My most recent experience includes being a Support Counselor for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder at a day camp. I was responsible for providing social skills training and hands on supervision to the children to help them reach their goals. From this experience, I looked how to work under stress, I learned to exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and I learned to be a team player and team leader. -Aside from healthcare experience, I enjoy helping the community in others ways. Being involved in Greek Life at Delaware has allowed me participate in many other community service events to help the community.

A Friend who is in the Pharmacy program at MCPHS put me in touch with students who have attended your program. -First time PANCE rates -24 month program - The students told me all about your great facilities and faculty and talked about the many opportunities for clinical rotations sites. I am also very drawn to the fact your program is accelerated and only 24 months long. -I feel that your program meets the criteria for what I am looking for in a strong program. I know that I would be a good fit at this school and that I have a lot to contribute -At MCPHS University, students are immersed in a culture designed to help them achieve their potential as healthcare professionals, where they are part of a community of like-minded learners. They are also trained with the same technology and equipment used in real-life labs, offices, and hospitals.

answer
-First, I would like to attend a strong program, graduate, and pass my boards the first time -I then would like to work on a team and gain as much generalized knowledge of medicine as possible -My long-term goals will depend on my experiences along the way. I hope to eventually find a specialty I am very passionate about and one that will be both challenging and allow me to make significant contributions to the healthcare profession
question
What is your greatest weakness?
answer
-I sometimes forget to make room for breaks in my busy schedule. This is something I've been working on. For example, when studying for long periods of time, I now always make sure I take a mental break to cook and eat dinner instead of eating on the go or while I'm studying. Even just a 20 minute break will help me focus better for a longer period of time.
question
How would you describe your personality?
answer
-I am a very high-energy person who is motivated by new challenges and experiences. I can maintain a strong work ethic no matter how stressful the environment may be. I am also very compassionate and considerate of others. Many of my jobs have demonstrates I can be a team player and work and commuicate extremely well with others. I get along with others very easily and strive to help people in any way I can.

The club has given me the opportunity to explore and research the profession further while educating other Pre-PA students about the application process.
question
What do you know about this program?
answer
-MCPHS, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is one of the oldest pharmacy (PharmD) schools in the country. -While it is a small school, they have the 6th largest endowment in the country. - The facilities, mostly located in about three buildings which sit across the street from a hospital, are absolutely immaculate. The buildings are new and gorgeous. The technology is STATE OF THE ART. The labs are set up like hospital rooms, with top of the line simulation \"dummies\" who do all the things a real patient would do. All the equipment you would find in a hospital room are in the labs and fully functional. The classrooms are also state of the art, with clickers being connected to the overhead projector so that students can answer questions Jeopardy style! Everything inside this school is clean, modern, and visually impressive. The staff are incredibly friendly and kind. - This school is a school that focuses solely on graduate health professions. At the Worcester campus, all of the programs are accelerated, so the student body averages between the ages of 26-28 and everyone at the facility has a prior degree. - Located near 7 other colleges. The school is across the street from a new hospital (St. Vincents), there are other state and psychiatric facilities close by, and UMASS Memorial Hospital is a five minute drive. The area is heavily populated by biotechnology companies, so healthcare and science is what draws people to this city. - It is 40 minutes from Boston and 40 minutes from Providence, RI, and there is a train station close to the school which can take you to these places. The drive from NY is about 3 hours. It is even closer to CT.
question
What do you value most in a classmate or co-worker?
answer
I really value teammates who are supportive and willing to go the extra mile to accomplish the task at hand. While working as a student worker, my boss had given all of us off Friday-Monday for Labor Day weekend. A few days before, she emailed all of us asking if anyone could come in last minute to work. The Health Center had been busier than expected during the start of school and many medical supplies needed to be restocked. A few of my coworkers and I volunteered to come and help catch up. Some of them even cut their vacations with their families short. We stayed until all the tasks were complete and my boss really appreciated our cooperation and dedication.
question
How have you stayed current and informed about the PA profession?
answer
-First, I continue to keep shadowing PAs in different specialties to get as much patient exposure as possible. One time, I asked a PA if I could shadow her again after having a great experience the first time. She told me I was more than welcome to come in, however, she may not be seeing as many patients and will be doing a lot of office work. Although hesitant at first, I still went in for the day. It ended up being a great learning experience. I was able to have many on-one-one conversations with the PA and ask her many questions about the profession. She told me all about her journey of becoming a PA and all the various specialties she has worked in. She described the different relationships she has had with her supervising Physicians as well as her different duties and responsibilities. Shadowing also allows me to learn firsthand the current challenges of the PA profession. -I also read PA forums online and even have an application on my smart phone called PA insider. I read it while walking to class, sitting on the bus, or even while laying on the couch watching TV with my roommates. It reveals a lot about the PA profession, how to become a PA, and what to expect during and after school. It's informative, easy to use, and well designed. -Lastly, I talk to all the PA students I know - Several of the previous PA Club Executive Board members are currently in school or now certified. I have an email thread with several of them and contact them whenever I have questions. They are all very passionate about the profession and therefore always willing to talk about their experiences and share information about the PA profession
question
If I asked your co-workers or fellow students to say three positive things about you, what would they?
answer
They would most likely say 1.) I am very approachable and easy to communicate and get along with and always willing to share my knowledge with them whenever they need help. 2.) Second, my fellow PA club members would say I have great organizational skills; I plan ahead and never procrastinate my work. I believe this has definitely been one of the reasons I have been elected Secretary of PA Club 3 years in a row 3.) The third thing they would tell you is that I know when to laugh. Attending school, working part-time, and applying to PA school can be a stressful time. I've learned that you can't take situations too seriously and that staying positive through stressful times really does help.
question
If it comes down to you and one other applicant, why should we select you?
answer
-If you compare my qualifications and your requirements, you will see that I am almost a perfect match for your program. -My experience taking a heavy course load while continuing to work in the clinical setting has prepared me to be successful in your challenging 24-month accelerated program. -I have fulfilled the recommended medical and shadowing experience in a wide variety of settings. I believe I have a full understanding of the PA role in addition to understanding your programs focus, mission, and goals. -Throughout life I have developed a good work ethic. I am determined and when I make a commitment to something I do whatever it takes to fulfill that commitment. I am passionate about being a PA and you will find that I will bring that passion to the program. When I believe in something I will be an advocate of it. As I become involved in the program I will promote it and become an advocate while during the program and after.
question
If I remember one thing about you, what should that be?
answer
-I am very approachable and easy to talk to. These are qualities that are important for a PA. Patients should feel comfortable talking to their healthcare provider if they have any questions or concerns.
question
Have ou applied to any other programs?
answer
-Yes, I understand the competition for PA programs and I would like to maximize my chances of acceptance into a program that will provide an optimal learning experience and prepare me to become the best PA possible. - I have applied to programs that best fit my criteria and interests and ones I felt I could significantly contribute to
question
What is a 'dependent' practitioner?
answer
-PAs are dependent practitioners. They are required to work with physician supervision. They must declare a supervising physician and be registered in the state of employment, however, they may also work autonomously
question
If you had a patient with a language barrier, how would you assist that patient?
answer
-There are many things to consider when dealing with someone who has a language barrier. In addition to the language issue, the person also comes from a different culture and that culture might have different understandings and values related to health and health care. -Preparation is key. I make every effort to learn about different culture so if I am ever in this situation, I have a basis for understanding -But in this situation, I would try and find a translator. Many hospitals have translators on staff. I might also try to work with family members who speak English and hope they can assist. I would watch nonverbal communication closely and make sure that I don't upset the patient. I would try and find new ways to calm him or her (calming facial expressions, smiling, etc.). I might draw pictures and diagrams -Example: Many of the children I worked with over the summer with ASD were non-verbal. My favorite technique to overcome this was using white boards. I often drew words and pictures on the board for them to understand. I also utilized picture schedules to show them what activities we would be doing each day.
question
What makes you mad?
answer
-I really don't get mad often, but injustice makes me mad. If I think things are unfair or someone is being treated unfairly, I get angry about that. In that situation, I assess whether or not I can make a difference, and if I can, I try to facilitate change. If I can't, I try to accept the situation and reframe it or use it as an opportunity to learn a lesson about how I will not do things or treat others. -As healthcare professionals, it is important to treat all patients the same and never treat someone unfairly because of their background or choices.
question
Tell me something unique about yourself that is not already included in your application
answer
-I am an avid runner and enjoy to run outside the most. I ran cross country in high school, but nowI just run for fun. This is a great stress reliever for me and gives me energy to get through busy days. It helps take my mind of things when I need a break. It not only keeps my body healthy but exercises my mind as well through its unique challenges. My goal is complete my first half-marathon.
question
If you could change one thing about the PA profession, as you understand it today, what would you change?
answer
-I would increase the number of colleges and universities that offer PA programs. The demand for PAs still exceeds supply, and new health care reform laws will create a need for even more practitioners -I would also increase the number of people who truly know what a PA is. Many of my friends can't even pronounce Physician Assistant and think it is the same thing as a Medical Assistant. I think it's important for people to know PAs have the ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients just like a physician.
question
What do you like to do outside of school?
answer
-When I'm home, I like to spend a lot of time at my home on the Finger Lakes with my family. Water skiing, wakeboarding, hiking, reading etc. -At school - Participate in sorority events, spend time with my roommates and friends, visit my Aunt and Uncle in Westchester, PA -Traveling to see my relatives who live all over the East Coast
question
Which field do you see yourself working in after graduation?
answer
-At this point, I am most interested in general medicine with a varied population of patients -In the long-term I am very interested in pediatrics, however, I know that I may change my mind as I learn more about the field and areas of specialty
question
Tell me your thoughts about health-care reform
answer
-I personally believe everyone in the United States should have access to health care. As far as the means by which we, as a nation, bring this plan into an action, that is a political decision vs. a personal one for me.
question
Do you think health-care reform will be positive or negative for physician assistants? Why or why not?
answer
-I think health-care reform will be a \"positive\" for physician assistants. With current plans to extend health insurance coverage for some forty-seven million people, couple with the current primary-care physician shortage, PAs will be in more demand than ever
question
Should all PA programs be master's-level programs?
answer
-The trend toward master's level PA programs started many years ago. Currently, the majority of PA programs are at the master's level. It is difficult to say that all PA programs should be master's-level because most of the PAs who were pioneers of the profession did not have master's degrees. However, I do believe that a strong case can be made that the rigorous didactic and clinical training in PA school warrants a master's degree.
question
Do you think HMOs and PPOs are good or bad for the PA profession?
answer
-I believe HMOs and PPOs are good for the PA profession because PAs are cost effective and yet rank highly in terms of patient satisfaction. Generally speaking, I think it was good for healthcare because it opened options for more patients to be part of the healthcare system.
question
Do you think PAs and nurse practitioners are in competition with each other?
answer
-No. PAs and nurse practitioners are both midlevel practitioners who fulfill a very important role in the health-care system. I look at both professions are working in collaboration as opposed to working against one another
question
Where do PAs fit on the hierarchy ladder with nurses, MDs, and nurse practitioners?
answer
-We are all on the same team, so I don't necessarily think in terms of hierarchy. Every team member, be it a nurse, physician, technician, or PA, has his or her own role and a common responsibility to provide the best care for the patient
question
Is it important for PA students to belong to local, regional, and national PA associations? Why or why not?
answer
-Yes. As medical professionals, it is important for PAs to remain current in both clinical and political issues at the state, regional, and national level. The profession is still a relatively new one, and PAs must remain vigilant concerning issues and policies in the health-care arena or risk negative consequences in the future
question
Tell me about a time when you had to overcome obstacles to get your job done?
answer
-When I was a support counselor for children with ASD at camp arrowhead this past summer. The most difficult obstacles were at the beginning of each session when a whole new group of kids were new to us. We had to learn their unique behaviors and challenges quickly in order to provide social skills training and support to help them reach their goals. Specially, I worked with one camper who was entirely non-verbal. This made it difficult to communicate with him and give direction. I had to utilize my resources, problem-solve, and develop a plan. I ended up using picture schedules and a white board to communicate with him. It ended up working great for the four weeks he was at camp and he was able to succeed and accomplish his daily activities and goals.
question
Tell me about a time when you had to handle a stressful situation?
answer
When I was a support counselor for children with ASD this past summer. There was one session when I was responsible for four children, who all had severe behaviors and required a significant amount of attention and support. One of the children had an incident while in the pool and I was unable to leave the other three unsupervised without an AutismUp Counselor. I had to take all four of the children to the Health Center and the three others were very upset. This was not easy but I was able to work through the stressful situation by using the picture boards to keep them distracted.
question
Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a change?
answer
I was a volunteering in the emergency department during the winter when Norovirus was spreading rapidly. The ED had an incredibly high volume of patients and had patients in beds lining the walls of the hallway. A sick elderly woman accompanied by her daughter and husband presented to the ED and was placed in an overflow bed. After they arrived, the ED implemented a change of rules and stated each patient was only allowed to have one visitor. Father had Dementia could not be left alone, I communicated to the daughter that I would be able to watch him and then accompanied him to the waiting room. Instead of making the man feel as though he was being babysat, I talked with him, made jokes, and laughed and he enjoyed the time we spent together. Family was very appreciative.
question
Your application states that you are a hard worker. Can you give an example of a time you worked hard?
answer
-My boss at the health center hadn't put anyone on the schedule for Labor Day weekend. She emailed all of the Student Workers last minute and asked if anyone would be willing to come in at all over the course of the weekend. The Health Center had been busier than anticipated an cold and urine packs were needed to be made. I volunteered to pick up a few extra shifts over the weekend to help out. A few of the other student workers decided to come in too and together, we got the job done. My boss was really pleased and it made her look like they never fell behind.
question
Describe an interaction you've had with a patient that made an impact on you.
answer
-Deanna is a Multiple Sclerosis patient who \"I learned a valuable lesson that day...\"
question
Tell me about a time when you had a disagreement or confrontation with a boss or co-worker
answer
-There was a co-worker at camp arrowhead who was giving one of the campers a lot more support than needed. We try to promote \"inclusion\" for our campers and let them do everything on their own until they need support. I understood that she had not worked with this particular camper before and she was unaware that he was capable of tying his shoes, holding backpack, and doing other simple tasks on his own. I explained to her in a civil manner that he is capable of doing these tasks and that he should only receive support when truly needed. His parents put him in camp to help him gain independence and we are here to help him achieve those goals. She hadn't thought about the impact she was having on the child and limited his independence. Things changed for the better and she appreciated by advice, honesty, and communication.
question
You've mentioned in your essay that you are 'good at selling new ideas to your boss and co-workers.' How do you do that?
answer
I figured out the best way to communicate wth the children with ASD who are non-verbal or have limited communication skills. I decided to come up with idea of using picture boards for their schedule and white baords to draw pictures and communicate with them. I made the picture boards and demonstrated the technique to my boss and she approved of it. By the end of the summer everyone had their own boards and was using them daily.
question
Tell me about a time when your communication skills made a difference
answer
Working with children with ASD poses many challenges with communicating. It is essential to speak clearly, slowly, and in a way that the children will understand me. If they are non-verbal, it is best to use positive facial expressions and white boards for picture drawing. It is also very important to communicate with my coworkers and boss when I am in need of assistance or a child is having behaviors that need extra support. Lastly, it is important to communicate effectively with the parents. They are trusting us with their children all day at camp so it is important to let them know how their child does and what activities they participate in. At the end of each week, we write weekly reports to communicate things their children succeeded in and areas they need improvement.
question
Give me an example of a time when you took initative
answer
When I was volunteering in Lima, Peru at the mobile medical clinics there was a mother with four children. Three of the children were ill and needed to see the physician, however, the youngest did not need medical attention at the moment. I notice the youngest was distracting the Mother while she was trying to care for and get her other children assessed. She was upset that she was not getting very much attention. I decided to try and help by offering to watch her youngest child until the exam was complete. I brought the child to the tooth brushing stand and taught her to brush her teeth. The family really appreciated what I did for them and the youngest was no longer upset.
question
Have you ever been in a situation, at work or in school, where you felt it was necessary to address an ethical issue? Describe that situation.\"
answer
When I had a lab for one of my classes we were assigned to groups of four and instructed to complete the lab report as a group. We all answers the questions related to our portion of the lab assignment. Before handing in the assignment, I read through my group members answers. The responses to the questions one of my group members answers sounded incredibly scholarly and nothing like her writing or words. I did not want to risk getting in trouble for using another persons words, and had a discussion with her about it. I simply told her that if she does not re write the answers in her own words I will have tell the teacher she is unable to complete the assignment. If she did rewrite them successfully, I would hand in the assignment and the situation would go no further. She ended up re writing everything and it sounded much better.
question
If you and a colleague had a personality clash, what would you do to make it better?
answer
If I could, I would wait a bit and give each of us time to cool off. I think perspective is important, and sometimes waiting gives people a chance to see the other person's side of the issue. Then I would ask to talk with the person and find out a time that works. I would discuss the problem with him or her and try to come up with a good solution. If I couldn't wait and the issue needed to be resolved immediately, I would take a breath to calm myself and then try to discuss it with the other person. I would try to get a win-win solution so that each of us was satisfied with the outcome.
question
Do you think it's important to promote team building in an organization? What steps will you take as a PA student to promote team building in the class?
answer
Yes, I think team building should be promoted in organizations. Part of learning in a classroom environment is learning from other students. Collaborative teamwork improves learning. I would do at least three things t promote teamwork in the class. 1.) First, I would be a good team member. 2.) Second, I would promote social interaction in the class because social relationships promote team relationships. 3.) I would encourage classmates to confront conflicts directly and resolve them as soon as possible 4.) It is important for us to learn about teamwork in our schooling since much of what we will be doing as a PA is working in a collaborative team environment
question
From your perspective, describe what makes a person \"likeable\"

Being friendly is very important to being likable. Research shows that people tend to like people who like them, so friendliness is important. Being genuine and being a good listener are also important. Finally, and perhaps most important for being successful as a PA, individuals who are empathetic are liked. Patients need to know that their health-care provider cares about them and to a certain degree, understands their problems and can relate to their pain (physical or emotional)

Immediately after the surgery, the patient begins bleeding severely from 'everywhere'. Without the blood products, he is likely to die. What are your options?
answer
-This concerns \"refusal and withdrawal of treatment\". Patients have the right to make their own health-care decisions, and medical providers have the obligation to honor those decisions. -The patient has the right to start, stop, or refuse treatment and my responsibility as a medical provider would be to disclose the consequences of not taking the treatment -I would allow free and effective decision making by the patient and respect patient personal, religious, and cultural values

How do you feel about abortion? Would you assist a physician in performing abortions?
answer
-Deciding to have an abortion is a very personal and complex issue. I personally believe that every abortion should be considered on a case-by-case abortion. -Abortion has been legal since 1973 (Roe vs. Wade. As long as abortion is legal, women have a right to choose -If I decided to work in a practice where abortions are preformed. I would clearly have made a choice to assist in abortions -However, I stand firm on the fact that medical providers have a duty and an obligation to provide the best quality of health care to our patients, no matter what the circumstances.

question
What are some of the greatest challenges/issues facing PAs today?
answer
-Legislation favors MDs and RNs more because they've been around longer. We must be proactive in advocating for ourselves. -PA's are not signed off on hospice care
question
What is a PA?
answer
-A midlevel healthcare provider with a high degree of autonomy that must practice under the supervision of a physician and have their work signed off on by that physician.
question
History of the PA profession
answer
-The first physician assistant program was established at Duke University Medical Center in 1965 based off of Eugene Stead Jr's fast-track medical curriculum. It began with four ex-Navy corpsmen. After this first program was established, more programs began developing around the country. -PAs were initially meant to extend the services of physicians by preventing, diagnosing and treating pts, but now they will also help create a value driven healthcare system that lowers cost but increases quality of care. They will provide patient centered, team medicine that is more easily accessible and focuses more on preventative services and patient education while also continuing the basics
question
What is the difference between a PA and a NP?
answer
-In a clinical setting, most are not able to tell the difference between a PA and a NP because they are very similar in terms of job duties, however, there are differences in how they get there. -An NP needs to be an RN first. Once they complete their RN and practice for a bit, they can go on to apply for their masters or doctorate program for Nurse Practitioner. -In contrast, most PA programs require a bachelors in any subject, prior health care experience in a variety of healthcare settings (i.e. EMT, CNA, RT) and then you get your masters as a Physician Assistant. -Furthermore, NPs are trained in the nursing model vs PAs which are trained in the medical model. The medical model is a disease model that is filled with pathology, clinical medicine, pharmacology, pathophys, and treatment. It focuses on the anatomical and physiological and biochemical malfxn as the cause of a disease. They are \"disease-oriented.\" This model treats humans as complex systems of anatomical parts and physiological systems. It is more of an evidence-based approach. PAs are trained in this model and are trained to care for pts along theri entire lifespan. -In contrast, the nursing model focuses on a patient's mental, emotional, and physical needs. This model accounts for the whole patient, not just the disease or the condition of the patient. It's a more systemic approach. The Nursing model consists of 5 parts: 1) activities of living, 2) dependence-independence continuum, 3) patient's life span, 4) factors influencing activities of living, 5) individuality in living. -Another difference is that in some states, NPs can practice independently without the supervision of a physician, whereas PAs always practice under a supervising physician. -Lastly, PAs are generalists whereas NPs can be either generalists or specialists. In certain states, if NP wants to perform NP duties within a specialty, then they must obtain a national certification within that specialty to perform. A PA however is more of a generalist, and can usually switch bw specialties with more realtive ease. However, there are residency programs available for PAs in more specialized areas such as cardiothoracic surgery, oncology, etc.
question

answer
-Olney Place working as a cashier -Boat gas example -Showed me the importance of attention to detail -Do not be afraid to ask boss for help when needed
question
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) vs. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
answer
An HMO gives you access to certain doctors and hospitals within its network. A network is made up of providers that have agreed to lower their rates for plan members and also meet quality standards. But unlike other insurance plan types, care is covered only if you see a provider within that HMO's network. PPO plans provide more flexibility when picking a doctor or hospital. They also feature a network of providers, but there are fewer restrictions on seeing non-network providers. In addition, your PPO insurance will pay if you see a non-network provider, although it may be at a lower rate.
question
Medicaid vs. Medicare
answer
Medicare = 65 and older Medicaid = For individuals with low income and limited resources
question
How healthcare reform affects PAs
answer
1.) More demand for PAs: As a result of numerous provisions designed to expand health insurance coverage, millions more Americans will now be insured, with the number likely to continue to increase for years to come. While it's beneficial to both individuals and society to have more people with health coverage, this new wave of healthcare consumers will exacerbate the already increasing physician shortage. Consequently, in the coming years, the system will likely rely more on health professionals such as PAs, and more will be expected of them. 2.) Recognition as primary care health providers: The ACA recognizes PAs as an essential part of the solution to the primary care shortage by formally acknowledging them as one of the three primary care health providers. 3.) Expansion of PAs: The ACA commits to expanding the number of PAs by providing financial support for scholarships and loan forgiveness programs, as well as by funding the training of 600 new PAs. 4.) Development of new payment models: Another provision of the ACA that has already, and will continue to, affect PAs is the development of new payment models such as accountable care organizations and patient-centered medical homes, which focus heavily on coordination of care. PAs will play a large part in this coordination, as the health workforce continues to adopt an increasingly team-oriented approach to care provision. 5.) Incentives for primary care: The ACA implemented new primary care incentives through which PAs can benefit. Through 2016, Medicare will provide a bonus of 10 percent for certain services provided by primary care providers, which PAs are eligible to receive.
question
PA scope of practice
answer
1. Obtain medical history 2.Conduct physical assessments and examinations 3. Diagnose and treat 4. Manage acute and chronic illnesses 5, Preforming and interpreting dignostic and lab studies 6. Prescribe medications 7. Counseling and teaching health and nutrition 8. Refer out 0. Perform minor surgical procedures
question
What is the value of a PA? What skills and value do PAs add to the healthcare system?
answer
-Because of their general medical background, PAs have flexibility in the types of medicine they can practice. Thus, they can be responsive to changing healthcare needs. Additionally, they are uniquely placed to provide preventive care services in all settings, from primary care to surgery. PAs believe strongly in patient education for better health. -PAs work in physician-PA teams and are educated in a collaborative approach to healthcare, which improves coordination of care and can improve outcomes. PAs are educated in intense educational programs that last approximately 27 months (3 academic years). They can be quickly trained and educated to begin practice, helping offset the worsening physician shortages. -PAs extend the care that physicians provide and increase access to care. PAs are creative, compassionate practitioners who strive to treat the \"whole person.\" Most PA programs require clinical training rounds in an underserved area or practice. PAs are prepared to deliver healthcare to those most in need.
question
Evidence-based learning
answer
Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) uses the best current research evidence to support clincial decisions in patient health care. Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is the process of systematically reviewing, appraising and using clinical research findings to aid the delivery of optimum clinical care to patients.
question
Is Obamacare good for PAs?
answer
Yes, the goal of healthcare reform weather obamacare or not comes down to lowering costs of healthcare but still not compromising the quality of care. PA's are the answer to lower cost high quality healthcare.
question
Are you familiar with any national or state regulations for PAs?
answer
-PAs are regulated on two different levels: the state level and the national level. 1.) State Level: PAs need to be licensed in their state, as laws vary somewhat depending on the state you are practicing in. All state laws require the PA to work under supervision of a physician, although the physician need not be onsite at the same location as the PA. 2.) National Level: The PA must be certified to practice. In order for this to happen, PAs must first graduate from an accredited PA program. Once they complete this program, they then must pass the PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam) which is administered by the NCCPA (National Comission on Certification of Physician Assistants). After this certification, a PA must MAINTAIN their certification by completing 100 hours of continuing medical education (CMEs) every 2 years. Also they must complete a recertification exam every 10 years. Certification: PA-s to PA-C by passing PANCE through NCCPA (national level). Registration-National level. Licensure- National Level. In order to practice you MUST: 1. Graduate from an accredited PA Program 2. Pass PANCE 3. CME renewal requirements With all 3, you can be licensed to practice in CA.
