Nucleus (nuclei)
answer
It maintains the integrity of DNA and to control cellular activities such as metabolism, growth, and reproduction by regulating gene expression. It has three main components: the nucleolus, the chromatin and the nuclear envelope. The nuclear envelope has nuclear pores to control the movement of molecules between the nucleoplasm and the cytoplasm.
question
Nucleic acid
answer
Any of the group of complex compounds consisting of linear chains of monomeric nucleotides whereby each monomeric unit is composed of phosphoric acid, sugar and nitrogenous base, and involved in the preservation, replication, and expression of hereditary information in every living cell.
question
Nucleobase
answer
nitrogen-containing biological compounds found linked to a sugar within nucleosides
question
Nucleotide
answer
The basic building block of nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA. It is an organic compound made up of nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group.
question
Histone
answer
proteins that dna tightly coils around to form chromosomes
question
DNA
answer
A double-stranded nucleic acid that contains the genetic information for cell growth, division, and function
question
RNA
answer
A nucleic acid present in all living cells and many viruses, consisting of a long, usually single-stranded chain of alternating phosphate and ribose units, with one of the bases adenine, guanine, cytosine, or uracil bonded to each ribose molecule.
question
Chromatin
answer
a mass of genetic material composed of DNA and proteins that condenses to form chromosomes during eukaryotic cell division
question
Chromosome
answer
A structure within the cell that bears the genetic material as a threadlike linear strand of DNA bonded to various proteins in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells, or as a circular strand of DNA (or RNA in some viruses) in the cytoplasm of prokaryotes and in the mitochondrion and chloroplast of certain eukaryotes
question
Chromosome territories
answer
regions of the nucleus preferentially occupied by particular chromosomes
