Symbolically the moon represents aspiration. We sometimes use the idiomatic phrase 'reach for the moon' meaning to aim for a distant goal, and in the mid-twentieth century idealistic rhetoric surrounding the race for the moon highlighted endeavour and discovery. In one ancient legend the moon was regarded as place where things wasted on the earth, such as misspent time, were treasured. In Feed the moon has just become another territory annexed to the United States.

Anderson uses allegory to discuss issues that face society now. Remember Feed was written in 2002. The media is all consuming, and our mental images consist of "snapshots" from songs, movies, ads... all challenging us to be better consumers rather than better people.
