Nowadays, it is becoming more common to hear about foreigners learning Korean.

Some people learn Korean to study or work in Korea.

Others learn it because they are interested in Korean popular culture such as Korean dramas and Korean pop songs.

When people learn a new language, they want to test their proficiency.
사람들이 새로운 언어를 배울 때, 사람들은 자신의 실력을 시험하기를 원합니다.
Korean learners can take the Test of Proficiency in Korean, also called TOPIK.
한국어를 배우는 사람들은 한국어 능력시험, 다시말해 토픽이라고 불리는 시험에 응시할 수 있습니다.
The TOPIK is a test for people who are learning Korean as a foreign language.
토픽은 외국어로서 한국어를 배우는 사람들을 위한 시험입니다.
It started in 1997, and 2,274 people from four countries took the test that year.
1997년에 처음 시작되었고, 4개국에서 온 2,274명의 사람들이 그 해 시험에 응시했습니다.
Since then, the number of people taking the test has frown every year.
그때 이후, 시험에 응시하는 사람들의 수는 매년 증가하고 있습니다.
This shows that the interest in Korea and the Korean language is increasing.

The Korean language is popular in many countries, as you will see if you visit a TOPIK test center.

Test centers are busy with people who want to take the test.

One day, I visited a test center.

There, I found many test takers who were reviewing last minute details so as not to fail the test.
그곳에서 시험에 떨어지지 않기 위해 마지막 순간까지 꼼꼼하게 복습하는 많은 응시자들을 발견했습니다.
They spoke many different languages such as English, Russian, French, and Japanese.

After the test, I interviewed a Korean language learner from China.
시험 후, 저는 중국에서 온 한국어 학습자를 인터뷰했습니다.
She said that she started to study it to understand Korean dramas better.
그녀는 한국 드라마를 더 잘 이해하기 위해서 한국어 공부를 시작했다고 말했습니다.
Later, however, she came to have another goal – to get a better job.

A high score on the TOPIK is helpful in getting a good job even in China!
