Acknowledge - Knock, ask "is it ok if i come in?" - Greet warmly - acknowledge the patient by name. Make eye contact. - ask: "is there anything i can do for you? - let the patient/family own their room

Introduce -Introduce yourself, your skill set, your professional certification, and experience. - "i'm a nursing student at USC"

Duration -describe how long a procedure, a meeting, or a project will take - let them know how long you will be there - tell them when you go to lunch - give an accurate time expectation for tests, physician arrival, and tray delivery, etc

Explain - provide important details about the procedure - Explain step by step what will happen, answer questions, ask if they have any questions

Thank you -be sure to thank patients for their cooperation -thank the patient for allowing you to assist them for the day -thank the family for assistance and being there to support the patient
