question
Ambulatory Surgery Center
answer
TRIA's orthopaedic surgeons perform a variety of procedures that don't require an overnight hospital stay. Common surgical procedures include knee and hip arthroscopy, shoulder repair and hand, foot and ankle procedures. Family members or guests can stay with you up until surgery in private pre-operative suites, designed for your comfort. They can then track your process on flat panel screens in the surgery hospitality area, using a specially designated code to protect your privacy. Pagers are even available so family and friends can relax anywhere in the facility while the surgery is taking place. Our doctors and nurses do everything they can to educate patients and make them feel more relaxed about surgery. Our pre-operative nursing staff calls every patient beforehand to make sure they are well informed and have all their questions answered about surgery. They are your advocates through the whole process, looking out for your well-being. Following surgery, you will recover at your own pace in a spacious area filled with natural light. Our outpatient surgical suites are equipped with voice-activated and image-guided technology so doctors and nurses have easy access to digital images (e.g., X-rays, MRI images) and patient records. Each suite is designed specifically to support the unique needs of orthopaedic surgery, including lighting, communication, connectivity and real-time medical video capabilities. All of this is controlled by voice command or at the touch of their fingertips. The technology allows staff to be more productive and concentrate more of their attention on the patient rather than the equipment.

question
What makes a good supervisor?
answer
A believe that a good supervisor is someone who garners respect and trust amongst their employees. A good supervisor brings out the best in their employees and is just as enthusiastic about their accomplishments as their own. I think its crucial that supervisors treat their employees fairly. They should give praise and credit when its earned and also hold people accountable when necessary. Teamwork and collaboration should always be emphasized.
question
How do you go about solving conflict between team members?
answer
First, I would ensure that employees know what is expected of them and what is appropriate behavior. If it's a minor issue, I think employees can work it out amongst themselves. However, if it's a more serious disagreement, I would hope my employee(s) would feel comfortable confiding in me and I would listen to both sides separately.
question
How do you encourage your team?
answer
I build a strong relationship built on mutual trust and respect for one another. I always make sure to praise their strengths and accomplishments.
question
How do you go about dealing with bad employees?
answer
I would schedule a meeting with the employee to see what the underlying issues are and if there are resources I can provide to help resolve them. I would work on an action plan with them to come up with ways they can improve and revisit it after about a month. If the employee continues to fall short of agreed upon goals, we would have to have a serious conversation about whether this position is the right fit.
question
Tell me about yourself.
answer
"I'm currently a Coding Consultant for UCare where I serve as part of a team of coding "go to" people. We are the resource across the organization for coding guidance as it relates to incoming claims, appeals, systems issues, payment policies, and provider education. I've created a coding resource library for our department and I've served as the key coding consultant for several projects involving individuals from various departments. Before that, I worked for HealthEast Care Systems where I was 1 of 2 coders in the business office of the Woodbury clinic. As a team, we were able to work together to reduce our days out from about 2 weeks to less than 48 hours. We were also frequently recognized for consistently helping our clinic to achieve a quarterly budget surplus of over $100,000. While I've enjoyed my experiences as a coder both on the provider side and the payer side, I would love to move into a leadership role. This is why the Coding Supervisor position at TRIA Orthopaedic Center is so exciting to me."
question
How did you hear about the position?
answer
"I saw the posting on Indeed and it caught my eye because I'm looking to take on a leadership position and I have a background in coding."

question
Why do you want this job?
answer
"I'm seeking a leadership role and I feel this would be a great fit for me. Also, TRIA has a stellar reputation and is a leader in orthopedic medicine in Minnesota. I really value the organization's mission to provide the highest quality of patient care and the focus on research and implementing innovative treatment methods. I would love to be a part of that."
question
Why should we hire you?
answer
"You should hire me because I am the best person for the job. I have the qualifications you are looking for. Besides earning an MBA and having a strong coding background, I always meet deadlines and I'm driven to not just meet, but exceed departmental and organizational goals. I excel at building positive relationships with others and I enjoy being a part of a team. I desire to not just be successful on my own but to collaborate with others to achieve successful outcomes."
question
What are your greatest professional strengths?
answer
I work well with people with different types of personalities and backgrounds. No matter what, I treat others with dignity and respect. I'm also very motivated and determined to always do my best work, meet deadlines, and exceed goals.
question
What do you consider to be your weaknesses?
answer
Something I plan to improve upon is my public speaking skills. Being in an MBA program and having to give at least one big presentation in every class certainly helped and I've been able to present information to small groups at work, but I would like to build my confidence in this area. I plan on taking a public speaking class to help me to do that.
question
Tell me about a challenge or conflict you've faced at work, and how you dealt with it.
answer
The ICD-10 implementation at UCare was challenging because our coding department is relatively new and coders were not consistently part of the ICD-10 readiness efforts for the years leading up to the go-live date. Consequently, much of the information the ICD-10 readiness team was working off of was not accurate. At the last minute, multiple ICD-10 mapping projects were passed along to our department and we had to divide up the work complete them under an obviously strict deadline. Each of us had to map thousands of diagnosis codes on multiple spreadsheets which was very overwhelming. We made the work our #1 priority and

question
What are you looking for in a new position?

answer
The perfect work environment to me is one where everyone is valued and feels inspired to exceed expectations and work together as a team to fulfill the organization's mission.

What's your management style?
answer
I would say that my leadership style is collaborative. I see my role as being the coach for the team, encouraging them to learn and grow and strive for success. Also, I've learned so much from those I've worked with and would continue that dynamic as a leader. If I'm not gaining knowledge from my employees and if I'm not learning from my interactions with my employees and becoming a better leader, then I'm not doing my job and i'm not fulfilling the mission of the organization.
question
What's a time you exercised leadership?
answer
Frequently I would take on a leadership role when assigned group projects during my time in the Augsburg MBA program. One example was in my Organizational Behavior course where I was part of a team of 4 students and had to research 2 companies and give a comprehensive presentation on their financials, organizational structure, culture, and strategic plan. I delegated tasks, set deadlines, and scheduled times to meet as a group and discuss the progress we've made and issues we've encountered. It was a really productive and, ultimately, successful collaboration. We communicated well and learned a lot from each other by working towards this common goal.

answer
They would describe me as dependable, organized, and motivated. They would say I'm compassionate and easy to get along with and that I make them laugh.
question
How do you deal with pressure or stressful situations?
