How the issues Luther present for the debate show the problems in the church of his days.
The “95 Theses” were written by Martin Luther who was a German professor of theology and a priest in 1517. Martin Luther revolutionary ideas acted as a catalyst for the final breaking away from Catholic Church. These ideas were also instrumental in forming the protestant reformation movement. These radical “95 theses” were written to express the growing concern by Luther with the corruption in Catholic Church. These Theses called for Catholic Church full reform and other scholars were challenged to debate with him on church policy matters. The major issue that concerned Luther was the matter of the officials of the church selling indulgences to people as a method of discharging them from their misdeeds.
With very strong and abrasive perso
...nality, martin Luther used a pen and a pulpit as weapons against the Catholicism corruptions on one side and the radical reformation extremes on the other. He focused on the papal abuses, clerical celibacy, scripture denial and other catholic doctrines. The first two theses had central idea of Luther that God’s major intension to believers was to seek repentance and faith alone but not deeds. Most of these Theses criticized the indulgences practices (Venden & Morris 37). According to Luther, indulgence was a remission of punishment to believers after revealing their sins. This is because they were supposed to give certain contribution to the church. He urged that forgiveness comes from within and no one in the whole universe has power or is able to look into the soul of another person except the creator. He even questioned whether Pop
could deliver the souls of the dead loved ones of the confessor from the purgatory.
The writings of martin Luther were responsible for sparking of the protestant reformation and Catholic Church fractionalizing. The core of Protestants was shaped by martin Luther’s teaching that Bible is the central source of religious authority and that it is only through faith that one can receive salvation but not deeds.
