Divide the number of words by the number of sentences to obtain the average sentence length. ( # words ÷ # sentences = avg sentence length ) Divide the number of long words by the total number of words to determine the percentage of long words. ( # long words ÷ # words = % long words) Add the average sentence length to the percentage of long words to obtain the Clarity Index. ( avg sentence length + % long words = Clarity Index)
