-many different types of foam plastics - some fiberglass boards -most are non-structural -common thicknesses are 3/4\" and 1\" -must use special large-headed nails

- considered structural - mostly used on multifamily for fire protection -sheathing grade w/ treated paper on both sides -usually 1/2\" for 16\";5/8\" for 24\" -same nailing pattern as OSB

-structural -rarely used today -usually 3/4\" boards;6\" to 12\" wide -can be installed horizontally or diagonally -must stagger joints -2 or 3 nails per stud
