question
Here's what I learned about Fair Use: It doesn't matter...
answer
if you link back to the source and list the photographer's name if the picture is not full-sized if you did it innocently if your site is non-commercial and you made no money from the use of the photo if you didn't claim the photo was yours if you've added commentary in addition to having the pic in the post if the picture is embedded and not saved on your server if you have a disclaimer on your site if you immediately take down a pic if someone sends you a DMCA notice (you do have to take it down, but it doesn't absolve you.) You are violating copyright if you have not gotten express PERMISSION from the copyright holder OR are using pics that are public domain, creative commons, etc. (more on that below.)
question
photos that are approved for use
answer
Creative Commons-licensed pics -- You can search for photos that are free to use (with some restrictions) through Creative Commons. Usually this means you have to attribute the photo to the owner and link back to their site. (All of my posts now have pics that are under Creative Commons license. And there are actually really great photos available.) Meghan Ward did a fantastic post on the breakdown of Creative Commons licenses plus listed some other photo sources.) Wikimedia Commons offers free media files anyone can use. (Creative Commons license rules still apply if they attached to an image; however, many images on Wikimedia Commons are in the public domain and therefore copyright-free, meaning anyone can use and modify them for any purpose. You need to look at the description for each image and abide by those rules. Buy a subscription to a stock photo site -- This can be pricey up front but then you have access all year. There are also sites that you can pay per pic. (Here is one example of a subscription service. Thanks to Janice Hardy for that suggestion.) Use photos that are in the public domain; as above, Wikimedia Commons is a great place to start. Here's another list put together by the editors at Wikipedia.
question
Clear subject
answer
In a simple photo, its subject is clear. Don't leave your reader wondering.
question
A well-composed photo
answer
1. Asymmetrical balance and the rule of thirds. Centered photos are bor- ing. Asymmetrical balance makes interesting shots, and using the rule of thirds is the quickest way to compose for asymmetry. Imagine the shot as a 3 × 3 grid, then position the focal point on one of the result- ing four gridline intersections. Rule of thirds. If we divide this image into a nine-square grid, our subject's face falls at the intersection of two of the gridlines. This makes for a photo with more interesting composition. 2. Tight cropping. Images that fill the frame communicate in no un- certain terms what the subject matter is about, and they also crowd out background distraction. Extreme tight crops and close-ups are particularly interesting, as they force us to look at the subject in a new way. 3. Natural lines to create movement. As in all visual communication, you want to control the eye's movement and flow through a photograph. 4. Interesting light. We've already touched on good tonal range. Playing with interesting highlights and shadows also results in compelling atmospheric images.
question
Image resolution
answer
• High resolution (print): 300 ppi/dpi • Low resolution (web): 72 ppi/dpi • There is no way to convert a low resolution image to a high resolution image In photoshop: main menu image>Image size (all info is in here)
question
FILE SIZE
answer
• 1000 bytes (roughly) 1 kilobyte (kb) • 1000 KB (roughly) 1 megabyte (MB) • 1000 MB= (roughly) 1 gigabyte (Gb) • rule of thumb: keep each image for a web page under 100 KB
question
Image types to be familiar with
answer
• Jpeg Used for web Does not have layers. Therefore if u want to go back and edit layers u cant because it doesn't preserve them "Lossy" compressed file (at the expense of quality) easy for sharing good for full-color photographs cross platform does not support transparency( gray and white squares as background) • Gif uses indexed color (256 colors, very limited) smaller file size supports transparency supports animation compressed, limited to one layer better for flat graphics, not a lot of color, great for logos • Png Limited to single layer Cross-platform Great for web graphics Supports multiple levels of transparency (such as drop shadow or watermark) • Psd Supports transparency Photoshop document, native file( whatever filetype is native to a certain program) NOT cross-platform. Can't open it in other software program Automatic default type in certain programs Preserves layers (more info therefore bigger filesize) Large file size Will not work on the web; works for print (InDesign) Similar to TIFF, difference is that tiff is cross-platform • Tiff Very similar to psd but it DOES allow cross-platform Photos and graphics Original photos are ideal Professional, high quality photos are expensive and take time Original graphics such as logos are expensive to make
