Chinese Exclusion Act

In 1890, Congress passed this act which prohibited immigration by Chinese laborers, limited their civil rights of the Chinese already in the US, and forbade naturalization of Chinese residents. Very prominent in San Francisco. Significant because the Chinese were hard workers and couldn't come to America to start over again.

In 1871, Congress passed the Dawes Act which stated that tribes would not be recognized as an independent nation. It also replaced the reservation system with an allotment system. Significant because this act forced Native Americans to assimilate with the American culture.

Battle of Little Big Horn

In June of 1876, Colonel George Custer and 250 of his men unexpectedly came upon 2,000 Sioux Native Americans in the Northern Plains. The Native Americans killed Custer and all of his men. This battle is significant because it increased Americans' need for avenges upon the Native Americans, which led to the surrender of the Indians.

Three steps that were taken to assimilate the Native Americans form 1865 to 1890 are the passing of the Dawes Act, taking control of Native American land, and using force to make the Indians surrender. The Dawes Act was passed and stated that the tribes would no longer be recognized as an independent nation, taking away their sense of power. The Native American lands were taken away from them as well, which added to the push to assimilate. Lastly, the bloodshed and battles killed many Native Americans, forcing them to give up total control and to assimilate with American culture.

Compare and contrast Old Immigrants and New Immigrants.

Old Immigrants and New Immigrants have a plethora of similarities and differences. One similarity is that both types of Immigrants has the desire for a fresh start. Both groups came to America to escape poverty, have religious freedom, or to leave political persecution. Old Immigrants moved to farms to become farmers and had a good work ethic. New Immigrants moves to cities for industrial jobs and were unskilled workers.
