Chapter 1
-Mr. Shelby and Mr. Haley discuss over trading terms
-Mr shelby owes Mr Haley, so Shelby offers his slave tom and Halley also wants Harry too,a young slave boy, they argue about it
-Eliza Harry’s mom over hears and Mrs. Shelby reassures her
Chapter 2
-Eliza is married to George Harris, another slave
– George works as a manufacturer, he invents a machine which makes his master jealous and makes him do the lowest chores on the farm
-the manufacturer wants George back but his master declines
Chapter 3
-George visits his wife and tells her everything, saying he wishes to never be born
-George dislikes his master but Eliza thinks it’s her Christian duty to obey
-one reason for his dislike is that his master drowned his dog and is making him marry another woman
-George wants to run to Canada to work and buy Eliza and her sons freedom
-she cautions George and they say goodbye
Chapter 4
-Uncle tom lives close to the Shelby house living with Aunt Chloe(an amazing cook) and his children
-George Shelby (Mr Shelby’s son) drops by and works to learn
-aunt chloe describes her crusts after George Shelby called her an amazing cook and slaves show up for church service
-meanwhile mr Shelby agrees to sell tom, but wants him to go to a good master
Chapter 5
-Mrs Shelby asks who that “low bred fellow is” (mr Haley)
-Mrs Shelby continues to ask questions about mr Haley including about Harry
-mr Shelby says he sold Harry and Tom, Mrs Shelby becomes outraged, there’s nothing that can be done
-Eliza over hears, horrified, he decides to run to Canada with her son
-she stops by to tell Uncle Tom that he’s been sold and aunt Chloe urges him to run as well, he declines
-Eliza asks them to tell George, her husband that she’s on the run
Chapter 6
-in the morning Mrs Shelby does not see Eliza so she sends her personal slave Andy to find out
-Mrs Shelby hears the news and is glad, mr Shelby informs me Haley, who becomes suspicious of him for having a hand in her escape, mr Shelby sends black Sam to get horses
-Andy tells Sam that “Missus” doesn’t want him to hurry so he deliberately takes his time, he also puts a burr to make the horses run away which proves successful
Chapter 7
-Eliza runs all night then comes to a moderate pace for running makes her look conspicuous
-she reaches a village near the Ohio river(frozen) and asks about the possibility of crossing, the stranger says that there is one planning to go tonight, Eliza and Harry stay and wait to rest
-meanwhile mr Haley comes to take Uncle Tom, Sam continues to delay but they finally reach the village
-Eliza sees them and makes a run for it, she jumps on blocks of ice, reaching the opposite side she sees mr symmes who helps her
-Haley says Eliza is possessed by 7 Devils and then returns home
Chapter 8
-mr Haley wonders why he ever wanted the kid, he returns to a tavern where he meets tom loker and his friend mr marks and hires him to track Eliza down
-they continue to talk about Eliza and Harry making them profit, loker demands $50 as a retainer
-Sam and Andy arrive home and tells Mrs Shelby and aunt Chloe the details of the day
Chapter 9
-Mrs bird asks her husband the senator what’s going on within the senate. He replies that they passed a law that forbids helping of fugitive slaves, she is completely against it
-Eliza makes her way to the Bird house and Mrs bird helps her
-senator decides to help them escape personally before morning, he takes them to homes old John Van Trompe, a man who has freed all his slaves, who protects them
Chapter 10
-Uncle Tom gets ready to leave and says his goodbyes
-haley and tom heads to a blacksmith shop
-George Shelby comes to say goodbye, being sad he gives tom a dollar to wear as a necklace
-tom continues on his way, Haley warns him not to play any tricks and Uncle Tom reassures him that he has no intention
Chapter 11
-A group of well dressed men in KY discuss of an advertisement of a runaway slave named George branded with the letter H
-they continue to discuss, Mr Wilson who knows George says he is a very smart man, some of the men says slaves are not property
-at this moment a man comes in with Spanish complexion and his slave, giving mr Wilson an uneasy feeling, he introduces himself as mr butler, they meet in private to talk
-mr Wilson finally realizes that it is George Harris, Eliza’s husband and urged him to go back
-George refuses and mr Wilson tells him to trust in God
Chapter 12
-mr Haley and Tom stops at an executor’s sale where they watch a man tell and old black woman, aunt hager, trying to get her to sell her child, Albert, but she insists on staying together than be separated
-Haley continues to examine and he buys Albert, they then board boats to head south
-on the boat two women discuss slavery whether it is good or not, a gentleman uses religion to justify slavery
– the boat stops and Haley leaves and returns with a black mom and her child
-on the boat an man buys the lady’s son and takes him away, sad, she commits suicide
Chapter 13
-Eliza is safe in a Quaker home with nice kind people, they find George and reunites him with Eliza
-George tells one of the Quaker men not to risk themselves for him, he replied that it’s not for him but for God
Chapter 14
-on the boat, tom begins to observe a child, Eva St. Clare on the boat, they then become friends and she wishes for her father to buy him
-the boat comes to a stop and Eva runs to meet her father but trips and falls overboard, tom jumps in immediately to save her
-the next day Augustine St. Clare negotiates to buy tom
-after buying tom, St. Clare puts him in charge of driving coaches
Chapter 15
-this chapter gives us background info on st. Clare and miss Ophelia (cousins)
-st. Clare grew up in the south as a son of a wealthy planter, he goes to the north for college and falls for a lady and returns to the south to make arrangements for marriage
-he receives a letter from her guardian saying that she will be marrying to someone else, st. Clare goes wild and marries an inappropriate woman who I selfish and shallow
-miss Ophelia, grows up in New England, Puritan, she decides to meet her cousin in the south and they get along very well
-Back to the present- miss Ophelia is on her visit to the south, she tries to help Eva get ready to leave the boat, they soon arrive home
-there she and Eva meets all the servants, st. Clare shows his wife a picture of him and Eva but she simply criticizes the picture
Chapter 16
-Marie whines about how much trouble slaves are but still keeps them
-chapter continues to talk about how selfish she is, Eva wants to tend to her but she thinks it’s silly
-Ophelia wonders if Marie thinks that slaves are human
-the chapter now turns to tom saying that he has nothing to complain about
-on Sunday morning, Marie sees Eva give mammy her vinaigrette which is studded with gold and diamond, thinking this is terrible she tries to demand Eva to take it back but st Clare intervenes
-the women go to church while st. Clare stays home, they come back and Marie tells st Clare that he should’ve heard the sermon because it would have done him some good, he replies saying the newspaper would’ve down more for him than the sermon
-Ophelia asks if he really believes that, they both then get into a discussion about slavery
-St Clare then asks Eva what she’s been up to, she says she’s been hearing tom saying prayers about st Clare and how he has room for improvement which he finds amusing
Chapter 17
-as the Quakers prepare for George and Eliza’s journey, they couple has a chat, Eliza encourages George to trust in God, struggling with faith he still tries to please his wife, his biggest concern is reaching Canada
-phineas fletcher come to take them to their next point, saying he overheard loker at tavern and his plans of recapture
-on their way, a Quaker come to tell them they are in pursuit, they pursuers trap them in a corner, but George has a gun, the battle starts and loker gets shot and pushed into the chasm
-loker’s men flee and George and the Quakers helps loker for treatment
Chapter 18
-Uncle Tom know he’s lucky, he doesn’t try to steal, one day he sees st Clare drinking, telling st Clare he should be good to himself like he is to everyone, st Clare promises to not get drunk again
-meanwhile, Ophelia meets Dinah, the head cook, she tells her there is no order in the kitchen and Dinah replies saying, what does Ophelia know about work. In a few days Ophelia comes up with a system for every part of the house without the cooperation of the servants
-later that day a slave woman (Prue)comes to sell rusks, she has a hangover,the st Clare servants tease her but Ophelia criticizes them and so does Dinah
-tom tells Prue that God loves her, but she’s never heard of Jesus, she tells him her story, how her first master used her to breed children for market so she lost all her kids which makes her lose interest in life
-tom meets Eva and tells her if Prue’s story
Chapter 19
-Eva tells tom that the story sunk deep into her heart
-a few days later another woman comes in place of Prue, Dinah asks where she is and finds out that she died after getting drunk again, Eva overhears and becomes greatly upset
-Ophelia asks why slave owners treat their slaves horribly to st Clare and they argue about slavery
-*st Clare has an anti slavery attitude but does not want to reform it*
-at supper Marie asks Ophelia is all southerners a barbarians, she says not all of them, Marie thinks that slaves should just behave themselves and nothing like the Prue incident would happen, Eva interrupts saying she’s dies of unhappiness, Marie says that the problem was that it was hard to “break” into these people, st Clare tells a story of how he once “broke” into a slave once: st Clare bought a slave when he was wounded and nurses him back to health, he then makes that slave a free man but the man would not leave st Clare’s side
– Eva starts to cry, these stories sink into her heart
-Tom misses home so st Clare helps him write a letter to home
Chapter 20
-st Clare buys a little slave girl named topsy and gives her to Ophelia , so she can prove to him she can raise her as a good Christian girl, the servants dislike the girl being there
-Ophelia finds that topsy has no parents nor does she know who God is, so Ophelia begins to train her, then she finds out that topsy has been stealing
-topsy is quick, smart and amusing, always into trouble, st Clare finds her amusing
Chapter 21
-at the Shelby house hold Mrs Shelby keeps urging mr Shelby to buy tom back but he countinues to get out of it
-the two discuss some solutions to their financial problems, aunt Chloe makes a proposition to work as their cook to buy tom back
-Mrs Shelby agrees
-George helps aunt Chloe write a letter to Uncle Tom
Chapter 22
– Uncle Tom receives the letter and is overjoyed
-Eva and toms friendship grows, Ophelia interrupts concerning of Eva’s health, she goes to st Clare and he laughs it off but does notice Eva’s failing health
-one day Eva’s asks why servants are not taught, Marie says they don’t need to be and Eva insists that they should be able to read the Bible
-Marie says Eva is giving her a headache, Eva’s leaves but still begins to teach mammy
Chapter 23
-st Clare’s brother Alfred and his son Henrique come to visit, they decide to go horse riding but Henrique refuses to ride his horse for it was dirty and he whips the servant, dodo, across the face
-tom tells Eva of this and she goes to help dodo, she thanks him sweetly and Henrique gives him a penny, but Eva’s kindness mean far more to dodo than the penny
-Alfred and st Clare discuss about slavery and racism
-eva and Henrique discuss the treatment of dodo and she tells Henrique he should love dodo, he perceives her as insane
Chapter 24
-st Clare finally admits that Eva is sick
-Marie begins to complain about how she is suffering because of Eva’s sickness, st Clare still sees hope and Marie sees her as dead
-Eva and tom discuss Jesus’s love for humanity
-st Clare asks Eva is she is truly better, she tells them that the time has almost come for her to be leaving, st Clare promises for the freeing of Uncle Tom when she is no longer alive
Chapter 25
-Marie and st Clare sits at home discussing of Marie’s latest physical health complaint
-Ophelia and Eva come home from church and Ophelia goes straight to her room and comes out with topsy, who cut Ophelia’s bonnet to make jackets for her dolls, Eva takes her to go to the reading room
-there st Clare and Ophelia listen in on the conversation: Eva asks why topsy is not behaving, topsy replies that she doesn’t know about love, but Eva lets her know that miss Ophelia loves her which is why she wants her to be good, topsy realizes that she is loved and begins to cry
Chapter 26
-Eva hears Marie slap topsy who is bringing flowers to her Eva’s room, Eva tells her to stop
-the Eva calls for a meeting of the st Clare house hold including servants and she tells them that she is giving away her hair for they will remind the person that God loves them and they will all go to heaven, the servants sob one by one as they take her curls
-after that Eva and st Clare about what it is really about to be a true Christian, after the conversation, her health goes downhill, Uncle Tom stays in the sick room to care for Eva, she loves to be carried around the ground so tom and st Clare take her around
-uncle tom is Eva’s best friend because they share the same faith, then one night Eva passes with Marie, mammy, st Clare and tom by her side, st Clare in agony but Eva at peace looking forward to death as she will enter the kingdom of heaven

Chapter 27
-Ophelia finds topsy getting a flower to Eva where she starts to cry, Ophelia explains that she has gone to heaven and takes her away, Ophelia learns from Eva and her relationship with topsy changes
-Marie, selfish thinking that only she is suffering thinks st Clare is not suffering at all, tom talks with st Clare about the bible and faith, then st Clare dismisses tom after wards for he is still in grief
Chapter 28
-st Clare tells tom that he will be freed but tom refuses until “mas’r” becomes a Christian
-st Clare reads some bible verses about people who don’t help the poor and says how he’s just like them
-opt and st Clare dishpan it is not enough to just refrain form doing harm, you can’t be good unless you actively do good, st Clare related to this principle to his lack of involvement in the abolition movement
-st Clare leaves and tom falls asleep, waking up to a knocking of a door, tom opens and men bring in the body of st Clare who tried to stop a brawl and was stabbed, as he dies he asks to to pray for him, he cries out mother and then passes away
Chapter 29
-with st Clare passed away, the servants panic for that have no master and Marie is going to take over
-Adolph tells tom that they will all be sold, tom asks Marie to free him for it was in papers and Eva’s dying wish but she refused, the next day, they were all taken to a slave warehouse
Chapter 30
-the narrator tells us about Susan and emmeline, who belonged to a mistress who tight them Christianity
-in the morning, some gentlemen discuss slaves for sale and one of them says they wouldn’t buy a st Clare servant
-a muscular man comes up to examine the slaves, Adolph gets as sold and emmeline and tom gets sold to the same master
Chapter 31
-Simon Legree, the muscular man heads up the red river with his new servants, he then searches his servants for belongings
-Legree tells them he’s a hard master who works his slaves till they die
Chapter 32
-Legree puts tom and the others into a wagon and head to his home, there he points out that escape is impossible
-they then get ready for the night as the next day is for heavy labor
Chapter 33
-tom is efficient laborer and gets to work right away
-he helps others in the fields, concerning Lucy(she’s behind so he puts some cotton in her bag), Cassy saw this and put some cotton in his bag telling him that he’s obviously new
-sambo a serve who has authority over the others tell Legree and he’s punishes tom and Lucy, tom has to whip her, he refuses
-Legree beats him
Chapter 34
-in agony, Cassy comes to tend to his wounds, telling him kindness is useless
-tom asks for his bible and reads Christ’s words before death
-carry tells her story: falls for a white man, has children with him, he gets a wife and sells her, bought by a master who used her as a concubine and sold her children, her master dies and she was sold to Legree, she asks tom about faith in God, he just tells her goodnight
Chapter 35
-Cassy confronts Legree about his cruelty towards tom, she stands up against him because she hates him
-sambo comes in telling Legree about Eva’s curl and how it’s a charm from a witch to feel nothing from beatings and orders to burn it
-Legree goes out and gets drunk and Cassy goes to emmeline’s room
Chapter 36
-Cassy enters and emmeline asks about the possibility of escape, Cassy says it’s too dangerous
-drunk, Legree talks to Cassy and she tells him to leave tom alone, Legree goes to meet tom and asks him how he’s doing, tom doesn’t answer so Legree kicks him, toms says he’s done what was right
-Cassy comes in and Legree leaves, tom makes a biblical reference between Cassy and Daniel in the lions den
Chapter 37
-now back to George and Eliza
-loker knowing that they’ll go to Canada, he tells them of watchers in Sandusky Ohio
-being in the Quaker house for 3 weeks he has become a changed man
-Eliza, George, and Harry head for Canada where they reach freedom at last
Chapter 38
-Legree puts Tom back to work, although he is still recovering
-tom begins to lose faith, one evening Legree mocks Christianity, and tell him to join Legree’s church, despite his doubts he still refuses
-after Legree leaves, tom has a vision of Jesus which makes him no longer feel alone
-one night Cassy comes to Uncle Tom and asks if he wants to escape with her but he refuses(she wants to kill Legree for he is drunk)
-he convinces her not to do it, he says he will help her and emmeline escape but he will stay
Chapter 39
-Cassy’s plan is to make everyone afraid of ghosts and it’s working, then Cassy and emmeline hide in the section of the house that is “haunted”(attic)
Chapter 40
-Legree takes it out on tom for their escape, he has his men look for them
-Uncle Tom tells Legree that he knows where they are but will never tell, Legree beats him to near death
-sambo and Quimbo felt guilty, Uncle Tom revives just long enough to hear them repent, he tells them that Jesus Christ will always forgive them and they begin to believe
Chapter 41
-while tom is dying, George Shelby comes just before he dies
-Mrs Shelby received a letter from Ophelia about the events after st Clare’s death
-tom tells George he’s going to heaven and he’s ready, Legree comes and George calls him satan, tom can’t bear vengeance and wants Legree to repent then tom passes away
-George wants to buy tom to give him a burial and Legree says he does not sell dead n……rs, George takes toms body and buries him carefully
Chapter 42
-Legree becomes even more freaked out about the “spirits” and drinks a lot which makes him sick and kills him, which was when they escape
-on the boat George Shelby and the two women meet a French woman who turns out to be George harris’s sister, she tells about George and Eliza, hearing this Cassy realizes that Eliza is her long lost daughter
Chapter 43
-Harris’s sister and Cassy head for Canada where they eventually find them and they all reunite
-George Harris’s family has a fortune which allows him to attend a university in France
-miss Ophelia takes topsy to her home in Vermont
-finally Cassy’s son is discovers and plans to join his family in Africa
Chapter 44
-George Shelby writes to his mother saying he will be home soon but does not write about uncle toms death
-aunt Chloe excited to see tom finds out to had died when George tells her
-a month later George Shelby gives freedom to all the servants but many doesn’t want to leave
-he says all of this was form uncle toms death that helped him decide on freedom. So whenever you see uncle toms cabin follow in his steps and be a good Christian
Chapter 45
-the narrator takes this time to deliver a sermon to makes sure everyone got the message
-first, we learn that not all these events are true
-kindness exist in slaveowners but unfortunately not in all
-she speaks directly to the people to end slavery
-if the Christians don’t follow the spirit of Jesus I regard to slavery they will suffer gods wrath
