1865-1877; the attempt to rebuild and reform the political, social, and economic systems of the South after the Civil War.

VP under Lincoln, came to office after Lincoln's assassination and opposed Radical Republicans; he was eventually impeached but the impeachment was unsuccessful

Member of the US House of Representatives and one of the leaders of Radical Republicans; fought to preserve rights of African Americans during the time of Reconstruction (including citizenship and voting rights)

A leader of the Radical republicans along with Thaddeus Stevens. He was from Massachusetts and was in the senate. His two main goals were breaking the power of wealthy planters and ensuring that freedmen could vote BTW - he was the same Massachusetts senator that was beaten nearly to death on the floor of the U.S. Senate by Preston Brooks after speaking out against slavery.

16th President of the United States saved the Union during the Civil War and emancipated the slaves; was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, April 14, 1865

April 9, 1865 - Robert E. Lee surrenders to US Grant at Appomattox Court House

Reconstruction by the president (!) - all states had to end slavery, declare that their secession was illegal, and 10% of men in each state had to pledge their loyalty to the U.S. to be readmitted to the Union

Southern laws designed to restrict the rights of freedmen

Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner and others led Republican party to 1. punish the South for causing the War and 2. push for citizenship and the vote for all freedmen

A northerner who went to the South immediately after the Civil War; especially one who tried to gain money or position from Reconstruction projects

Southern white who supported Republican policies during Reconstruction (and may have made a few dollars doing it).
