- captured Jerusalem (1099) - won a narrow strip of land and created 4 crusader states

failed to retake it

- two agreed to a truce (1192) - Jerusalem remained under Muslin control - unarmed Christian pilgrims could freely visit the city's holy places

political; government ~ kings power increased ~ Popes lost power economic; trade ~ merchants expanded trade social; society ~ women were in charge of estate and business religious- religion ~ Muslims and Christians don't like each other (tension increased)
