What is West Side Story?
West Side Story is an iconic musical film that was released in 1961 and is still loved by many people around the world today. It tells the story of two rival gangs in New York City, the Jets and the Sharks, and their struggle to survive in a hostile environment. The musical follows Tony, a member of the Jets who falls in love with Maria, a Shark. Despite their social differences, they are determined to be together but must overcome numerous obstacles including gang violence and prejudice.The film features some of Broadway’s most memorable songs such as Maria, Something’s Coming and Tonight as well as energetic dance numbers that are still iconic today. The choreography by Jerome Robbins won him an Academy Award for best choreography. West Side Story also won 10 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director for Robert Wise and Best Supporting Actor/Actress for George Chakiris (as Bernardo) and Rita Moreno (as Anita). West Side Story remains relevant to this day because it tackles issues that are still present in our world today racism, classism, gang violence etc showing how love can transcend all these divisions if we just try hard enough. Its message of hope is timeless; no matter what obstacles come our way we can always choose love over hate if we have enough courage to do so.
