What is Substantive Law?

Substantive law is a term used to refer to the body of law which defines and regulates rights and duties between individuals. It includes the laws of contract, tort, property, criminal law, family law and international law. Substantive laws are based on the principle that certain conduct is either permissible or prohibited. They provide a basis for resolving disputes between parties by defining what rights an individual holds in relation to another person or entity.The primary purpose of substantive law is to ensure justice and order in society by creating legal rules that are designed to protect people’s rights and interests. By providing set boundaries for acceptable behavior, substantive laws encourage citizens to abide by them and promote social harmony within communities. Substantive laws also serve as a deterrent against criminal activities because they have clear punishments for those who break them.Substantive laws differ from procedural laws which outline how legal proceedings should be conducted in courtrooms or other settings where legal disputes are resolved. It’s important for citizens to understand both types of law as they will often come into contact with them when engaging in various activities throughout their lives such as entering into contracts or participating in litigation processes.
