1. Likeness and Differences The Outsiders and Pride and Prejudices The Outsiders n S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, two groups of high schoolers are from rival schools and different social classes. The lower class group is called greasers because the members have greasy, long hair. The Socials, or Socs, are upper-class youth from the West Side of town. Cherry Valance, a Soc girl, and Ponyboy Curtis, a greaser boy, talk about books, music, and sunsets and find they have many shared interests. For a while, they rise above the separation between their groups. Ponyboy understands that although greasers and Socs face different adversities, they all have the same basic struggles and worries. Later, the greasers and the Socs fight, and one member is killed. Cherry decides to spy for the greasers. In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice there are strict lines drawn between the classes. The middle class Bennets socialize with the Bingleys and the Darcys, who are from the upper class, but they treat the Bennets as their social inferiors. Mr. Collins blatantly flatters his patron from the upper-class, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Miss Bingley does not approve of anyone who is not as socially elevated as she is. Mr. Darcy does not want to tarnish his family tree with anyone from the lower class, and Wickham needs money so he can climb to a higher social position. How are class differences handled in The Outsiders and Pride and Prejudice?
