What is Patrick Henry?
Patrick Henry was an American Founding Father and lawyer who is perhaps best known for his stirring speech given in 1775 to the Virginia Convention, in which he uttered the famous phrase, Give me liberty, or give me death. Born on May 29, 1736 in Hanover County, Virginia to a prominent family of planters and lawyers, Henry had a remarkable career that spanned many decades and included service as a legislator and Governor of Virginia. A leader in the Revolutionary movement from its earliest days, he was one of the most influential proponents of independence from Great Britain.Henry had an early legal education under his father’s supervision before being admitted to the bar in 1760.
