What is Old Man And The Sea?
Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel, The Old Man and the Sea, is a story of an aging fisherman’s quest for redemption. It follows Santiago, an elderly Cuban fisherman who has been unable to catch any fish in 84 days. Defying convention and his own waning physical strength, Santiago sets out on a daring voyage far into the Gulf Stream in search of one last big catch. While at sea, he battles sharks and braves storms before finally catching a giant marlin that would change his life forever. The power of The Old Man and the Sea lies in its simple but profound themes about courage, determination, perseverance and resilience. Despite all odds being against him his age-related frailty; bad luck from not having caught anything over two months; fierce competition from younger fishermen; harsh conditions with no food or water during the expedition Santiago maintains faith in himself throughout his journey. He draws upon inner reserves of will-power to manage his exhaustion as well as intense hunger and thirst while struggling to bring back home what ends up being more than he bargained for: a large marlin that weighs several times more than what he can physically handle alone (despite help from other fishermen). His ultimate success also comes with great personal cost as he must constantly battle nature’s elements while holding onto his prize until they both eventually make it back to shore together. Hemingway uses vivid imagery to convey the magnitude of Santiago’s feat from scenes where Santiago talks lovingly to the marlin despite its dangerous size or when he was going through another world which was a world of time.when [he] felt quite sure there were no fish anywhere nor ever had been nor would be. These moments provide readers insight into how remarkable Santiago is for continually pushing himself beyond his limits despite knowing full well that failure is always just around the corner. By doing so we are shown how important it is never give up even if success does not come easily or quickly a message that still resonates today regardless if one finds themselves stuck in their own seemingly endless struggle for achievement or fulfillment in whatever form it may take on their respective journeys through life.
