What is Narrator?

A narrator is a person who tells a story. In literature, the narrator is the storyteller and may be one of the characters or an outside observer. Depending on the author’s intentions, the narrator can be highly involved in the story and provide readers with detailed accounts of events, or they might be totally detached from what’s happening in order to give readers an unbiased view of what takes place. A narrator can also act as a filter through which readers experience events by conveying their own attitudes, thoughts and feelings about what is occurring in the story.The type of narration used by an author will influence how a story unfolds for readers. For example, first-person narration gives an intimate glimpse into one character’s thoughts and feelings while third-person limited omniscient narration provides broader insights into multiple characters’ perspectives. Authors might also use stream-of-consciousness narration to convey internal monologues that explore characters’ innermost musings and decisions while they are taking place in real time. Narrators can have different levels of reliability depending on their involvement with a story. An unreliable narrator may not always provide accurate information or intentionally withhold details from readers, creating suspense as they try to make sense out of incomplete information. On the other hand, reliable narrators generally provide objective accounts based on fact rather than opinion or bias so that readers can trust that what they are being told is true. Ultimately, it is up to authors to decide how best to tell their stories through narrative voice, point of view and level of involvement from narrators so that readers engage with them in meaningful ways.
