What is Monster?
Monster is a 2003 American drama film directed by Patty Jenkins, written and produced by Jenkins and Donald Kushner. It stars Charlize Theron as serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a former prostitute who was executed in Florida in 2002 for murdering six men (she was also suspected of killing others) between 1989 and 1990. The film follows Wuornos’s story from her troubled childhood to her death sentence. The film received critical acclaim; Theron won numerous awards for her portrayal of Wuornos, including the Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first South African to win an Oscar in a major acting category. The film received nine total Oscar nominations at the 76th Academy Awardsone more than it had received at any other awards ceremonybut failed to win any additional Oscars beyond Theron’s Best Actress award. Monster was released on December 25, 2003 in North America by Newmarket Films and grossed $34 million worldwide against its $8 million budget. At its core, Monster is about a woman’s struggle with trauma and abuse throughout her life, leading to her violent actions as an adult. Despite being initially portrayed as a monster in the media due to her killings, audiences are able to see past this facade through Jenkins’ script that shows Wuornos’ vulnerability and complexity as a person instead of just focusing on her criminal acts. In doing so, viewers are able to better understand why she decided to commit such horrific crimes after years of being mistreated by society itself something that many people can relate with on some level or another.
