What is Literary Elements?
Literary elements are the building blocks of literature, and they include characters, setting, plot, tone, point of view, theme and symbolism. Literary elements can be used to analyze a story or poem to determine its meaning and relevance. They can also be used to understand how a certain text has been crafted and why it is so effective in conveying the author’s message. Characters are one of the most important literary elements as they create the narrative world within which the action unfolds. Characters represent different aspects of human nature and emotions that allow readers to relate to them on a personal level. Character development often reveals information about the protagonist’s motivations or gives insight into how decisions were made throughout the story. Setting is another essential element as it serves as an environment in which all other elements take place. It includes physical details such as time period, location or climate; social context such economic status or political structure; even cultural values and beliefs play an important role in forming a setting’s atmosphere. By understanding setting readers can better comprehend characters’ actions within their context as well as gain insight into larger themes that may be present in a text. Plot is arguably one of the most essential components in any piece of literature since it drives much of what happens within a narrative arc by providing structure for characters’ actions and reactions over time. Plot allows readers to follow along with conflicts between characters while anticipating what will happen next based on previously established patterns within texts such as increasing tension leading up to climaxes followed by resolutions that usually bring some sort of closure for reader satisfaction at the end. Tone is another key element that conveys emotion through language choices made by authors when crafting stories. Tone allows readers feel like they are experiencing events first hand from beginning till end , picking up on nuances conveyed through descriptions , dialogue , sentence length etc. Tone can also be changed throughout a text depending on what events are happening at certain points creating mood for reader immersion. Point-of-view refers to who narrates stories , typically being either first person (I) or third person (they). Depending on whether narrator speaks directly from I POV (first) or speaks from outside perspective (third) changes how readers interpret events due impact created when using either mode. First person tends create more emotional connection with protagonist while third allows freedom explore different points-of-view without bias towards specific character’s thoughts / feelings.
