What is Liberty And Union?
The phrase Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable is an iconic phrase associated with American history. It was first uttered by Daniel Webster during a speech in the United States Senate in 1830. In his speech, Webster argued for the preservation of the union between the states as an essential part of preserving America’s liberty. He argued that without union there could be no liberty because each state would be left to its own devices without any national oversight or guidance: We may be tossed upon the waves of political controversy we may be driven asunder by angry passions we may become involved in civil discord but through it all, let us cling together with unabated devotion to Liberty and Union – now and forever one and inseparable! In essence, Webster was arguing that Americans should strive to maintain both their individual rights while also recognizing that they needed to work together in order to ensure those rights were protected. Over two centuries later, this idea still holds true today. Although it may seem easier at times to divide ourselves among different beliefs or ideologies, it is only by remaining united under a common set of principles that we can truly uphold our liberties. This unity does not always come easy however – it requires patience on both sides to come up with compromises that work for everyone involved. But if Americans are willing to put forth this effort then they can continue on in the tradition of Daniel Webster maintaining their Liberty AND Union now and forever.
