What is Instrumentation?
Instrumentation is the use of instruments, devices, or systems to measure and control physical processes or other variables. It is a key component in many areas of engineering and technology, including the development and operation of industrial processes such as oil refining, automotive manufacturing, power generation, nuclear energy production, pharmaceutical production, medical equipment design and operation, aircraft navigation and control systems. Instrumentation is also used in scientific research to study natural phenomena such as weather patterns or animal behavior. Instrumentation engineers are responsible for designing the instrumentation needed to monitor and control complex systems. This includes selecting the appropriate sensors or transducers for measuring physical parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow rate and position; choosing the most suitable type of signal conditioning system; specifying signal acquisition hardware; designing data acquisition software; setting up measurement networks; creating visual displays for operators; designing automatic test equipment (ATE); creating automation controllers for machinery operations; writing instrument drivers; developing calibration procedures; installing instrumentation systems in plants and laboratories.Instrumentation engineers must have a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles including digital circuitry design principles as well as mechanical engineering principles including sensor designs. They must be proficient with computers so they can program embedded processors used in automation controls as well as write software programs that interact with instruments. They must also be knowledgeable about communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP that enable different types of instruments to communicate with each other over long distances. In addition to their technical expertise they must also possess good project management skills so they can efficiently manage projects from concept through implementation while meeting customer needs on time and within budget constraints. In summary Instrumentation Engineering involves a comprehensive knowledge base which allows an engineer to successfully plan out all aspects related to monitoring and controlling complex systems using a variety of measuring devices coupled together with sophisticated data acquisition software.
