What is Fire Science?
Fire Science is a field of study focused on the science and technology of fire safety, detection, and suppression. Fire Science deals with the physical behavior and chemistry of fire, the development of strategies for controlling fires, and the investigation of fire-related incidents. In addition to studying the fundamentals of fire behavior and combustion processes associated with fire safety engineering design principles are also studied in order to understand how best to protect people from fires using building codes and regulations.The coursework in Fire Science covers topics such as building construction materials; smoke management systems; warning systems; hazardous material identification; ventilation control systems; high-rise buildings; industrial facilities; wildland/urban interface protection systems; arson investigation techniques; hazardous materials response plans ; emergency preparedness plans ; evacuation plans ; risk assessment programs ; code interpretations ; advanced life support operations ; emergency vehicle operations ; firefighter health & safety issues ; hazardous waste management programs. Special attention is paid to current laws & regulations governing various aspects related to emergency services activities such as NFPA standards , OSHA regulations , EPA guidelines , etc. In addition to classroom instruction there are several opportunities for hands-on learning experiences such as internships at local fire departments or other organizations involved in public safety activities. These can provide students with invaluable experiences that prepare them for success in their future careers in the field.
