What is End Tidal Co2?
End tidal CO2 is a vital measure of human respiratory system health. It is the amount of carbon dioxide present in exhaled air and reflects the efficiency of gas exchange during respiration. End tidal CO2 can be used to monitor patients receiving mechanical ventilation, to help diagnose respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD, as well as for monitoring general breathing patterns.End tidal CO2 levels are usually measured with a device called a capnograph or end-tidal CO2 detector. This device measures the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in exhaled breath during expiration and helps clinicians determine if there is an issue with gas exchange in the lungs. Abnormal levels can indicate inadequate oxygenation or ventilation, suggesting that something isn’t working properly in the lungs which may need further investigation or treatment. For example, if someone has COPD their end-tidal CO2 levels will be higher than normal due to impaired oxygen exchange and they may require supplemental oxygen therapy or other treatments to improve their condition.Normal end-tidal CO2 values range from 35 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) at rest up to 45 mm Hg with exercise; however, this range may vary slightly depending on age and medical conditions like asthma or COPD. Monitoring end-tidal CO2 levels can help physicians assess overall respiratory function as well as determine if supplemental oxygen is necessary for certain patients who may have difficulty breathing on their own due to underlying medical issues like COPD. In addition, high end-tidal CO2 readings may indicate impending respiratory failure which could require immediate intervention such as intubation before it becomes life threatening. In conclusion End tidal Co2 is an important measure for assessing human respiratory system health that helps physicians identify potential problems early so they can provide appropriate treatments before more serious complications arise ensuring healthier outcomes for patients struggling with difficult breathing issues like those related to asthma and COPD.
