What is Badminton?
Badminton is a very popular sport that has been around for centuries. It is an incredibly fast-paced game that requires quick reflexes and excellent coordination. Badminton can be played both indoors and outdoors, and it’s enjoyed by people of all ages. The objective of the game is to hit a shuttlecock over a net while keeping your opponent from doing the same. Players use rackets strung with either nylon or gut strings to return the shuttlecock across the net. The origins of badminton can be traced back to ancient Greece, where a similar game called battledore was popular among warriors in training. The modern version of badminton originated in India during the 19th century, when British army officers stationed there adapted battledore into an outdoor game they called poona (or pune). By 1873, badminton was well established in England as one of their national sports. Today, badminton is mainly played competitively by two opposing teams who take turns volleying the shuttlecock over the net. Matches are usually played to 21 points or 15 points depending on which type of competition it is (singles or doubles). Competitive players must have excellent speed and agility; they must also know how to use tactics such as deceptive shots and drop shots to outwit their opponents. Badminton not only helps develop hand-eye coordination but also encourages physical activity among all ages and abilities; this alone should make it appealing enough for anyone looking for an exciting sport. It’s no surprise then that badminton continues to be embraced all over the world as one of today’s most popular racquet sports.
