question
Explain the reciprocal relationship between human society and limiting factors.
answer
Human society makes modifications to the environment to suit its needs. Humans can live in large numbers in harsh environments that do not necessarily support the population because of these modifications. Humans cannot, however, change the fact that they are affected by limiting factors. They can change the limiting factors in a specific area, but are still influenced by limiting factors in a larger area, either by region, or globally. Food, water, and energy supplies are limited and will only support a certain human population size. If the human population exceeds this size than disease, famine, and other limiting factors will naturally limit the population size
question
How have scientific advancements been both beneficial and disadvantageous to society?
answer
Scientific advancements have benefited society in a number of ways. Improvements in communication and transportation have helped stimulate economic growth. Advancements in medical technology have led to an increase in the overall health of society through vaccinations, antibiotics, and other medical technologies. Some disadvantages of scientific advancements to society are the increase in carbon dioxide emissions, the increase of hazardous waste, increased urbanization, and an increase in resource use. Some of these disadvantages can be curbed through further scientific advancements that lead to a decrease in waste production and employ alternative energy sources.

question
Explain how famine, disease, and war are more likely with larger populations.
answer
Larger populations lead to an increase in the demand for resources. Since the resources available do not increase with the increasing population, resources become scarce as there is an increased demand without an increased supply. Famine occurs when there is not adequate food supply for a population, which is directly related to the scarcity of resources that can come about due to a large population. Disease is more likely when large numbers of people are in close proximity and when resources are scarce. The likelihood of war increases as the competition for resources increases as well.
